Dicen que en la vida hay un mercado para todo, y aunque se piensa que quien tiene dinero es capaz de comprar cualquier cosa, esto no implica que sea lo correcto, o por lo menos lo moralmente aceptado por la sociedad. Y justo empiezo con este pensamiento, pues está el dilema entre comprar o adoptar mascotas.
Particularmente soy partidaria de la adopción, y muchas de mis mascotas han sido adoptadas, salvo una que compramos como regalo para mi hijo mayor, aunque en realidad yo fui quien se enamoró de ese perrito apenas lo vi. Era un boxer de 3 meses que llegó a la oficina junto con una de sus hermanitas, pues eran 8 bellezas marrones con el pecho blanco, que nacieron en casa de una de las asistentes.
Me aceptaron pagarlo por cuotas, y luego de que lo desparasitaran, vacunaran y le cortaran la colita, lo fuimos a buscar. Para entonces no sabía nada del mercado de la cría de perros de raza, más allá del hecho de que existían, pero los intríngulis los supe luego de comprar.
Hércules llegó a casa, para llenar un vacío que dejó Zeus, el boxer de una ex pareja que me había dejado enamorada, y a quien dejé de ver al terminar esa relación. No sabía que me gustaban tanto estos perros hasta que tuve contacto con Zeus, ya que mi raza preferida eran los dálmatas, pero nunca tuve uno.
Este perrito pasó a ser un hijo más, yo estaba pendiente de sus vacunas, idas al veterinario, comidas y paseos, aunque el aseo quedaba de parte de mi pareja, pues estaba embarazada de mi segundo hijo, y me daba temor que en medio de su alegría me hiciera caer o me diera un golpe en la panza.
Con los meses, la señora que me lo vendió comenta que ya habían salido de todos, y que con ese dinero compraron muebles nuevos y empezaron la ampliación de la casa, contando que con la nueva camada, terminarían todo. Mi indignación fue terrible, al ver como usaban sus mascotas como fuente de ingresos, ya que los habían comprado justo para ello. Mi perro era producto de la cuarta camada, así que sin descansar entre una y otra, seguían cruzándolos con el fin de venderlos.
Ya había tenido dos perritas adoptadas, y por eso no había puesto interés en enterarme del trasfondo de la compra-venta de mascotas, pero ya luego de esto, mi perfil va exclusivamente a la adopción, ya que hay muchos que desean y necesitan de cuidados, además que al no comprar, contribuyes desde tu nicho a minimizar el mercado.
Sin embargo, este proceso tampoco es tan simple, a menos que sea un trámite p2p, pues si se desea adoptar a través de alguna organización, la burocracia emula el sistema implementado para hacer lo propio con bebés huérfanos o abandonados: papeleo, visitas y un sinfín de requisitos, que más de uno desiste del intento.
Particularmente, considero que en ambos casos, es importante tomar las medidas de seguridad necesarias para garantizar el bienestar del ser adoptado (sea humano o animal) pero también actuar de manera expedita, ya que ante las largas esperas, el tiempo se pasa y la vida se acorta, dejando secuelas de cansancio y tristezas en medio del camino.

Igualmente, muchas veces luego de pasarse todos los requisitos y entrevistas, las fatalidades ocurren, poniendo el ojo sobre el sistema y pensando si realmente son tan necesarias las trabas de seguridad, y acá también aplica para la adopción de animales.
Pero fuera del proceso, hay muchas formas de adoptar, sobre todo porque hay personas que cruzan sus mascotas sin intención de vender, o que por alguna travesura hormonal terminan quedando encinta, y buscan gente de buen corazón que desee darle un hogar a estos animalitos.
Más allá de comprar o adoptar, lo importante es que en el proceso se mantenga el respeto y el amor entre las partes, y que se haga un seguimiento, para verificar el compromiso. Y justo en este momento, recuerdo cuando dimos en adopción a los perritos de mi primera mascota, pues mi papá les decía a cada persona que se lo llevaba "si no lo va a querer, me lo devuelve sin problemas".

Months later, the woman who sold him to me said they had already sold all their puppies and that with the money they had bought new furniture and started expanding the house, counting on the new litter to finish everything. I was outraged to see how they were using their pets as a source of income, since they had bought them precisely for that purpose. My dog was from the fourth litter, so without a break between litters, they continued breeding them to sell them.
I had already adopted two dogs, and that's why I hadn't been interested in learning about the background of buying and selling pets, but after this, my focus is exclusively on adoption, since there are many who want and need care, and by not buying, you contribute from your niche to minimizing the market.
However, this process isn't so simple either, unless it's a peer-to-peer adoption. If you want to adopt through an organization, the bureaucracy mirrors the system used for adopting orphaned or abandoned babies: paperwork, visits, and countless requirements, which often discourage many from trying.
Personally, I believe that in both cases, it's important to take the necessary safety measures to guarantee the well-being of the adopted being (human or animal), but also to act quickly. With long waits, time passes and life seems to slip away, leaving behind exhaustion and sadness along the way.

Beyond buying or adopting, the important thing is that respect and love are maintained between all parties involved, and that follow-up is done to verify the commitment. And right now, I remember when we gave my first pet's puppies up for adoption, because my dad would tell each person who took one, "If you're not going to want it, you can return it without any problem."
