En algunas ocasiones he hablado sobre el mate y también expresado mi posición con respecto a si tomarlo o no. Y no es que no me guste, sino que desde hace mucho, el café ha sido ese compañero silencioso que es el mate para los argentinos.
Pero justo cuando tomaba las fotografías para el post más reciente que publiqué sobre este tema, uno de esos paquetes me hizo un "guiño" que no pude resistir, ya que desde hacía meses que había visto esta yerba con sabor a coco, que me llamaba la atención desde que llegó al supermercado, pues al sacarla del empaque para guardarla en el anaquel, ese particular olor me hizo querer probarla.
Y quizás el universo conspiró para que ese momento llegara, pues a mi hijo (el matero oficial de casa) se le terminó su empaque de yerba, y cuando fui a comprarle la marca que él consume, no quedaba ni una unidad. Así que para no llegar con las manos vacías, aproveché y compré el empaque con sabor a coco.
Por supuesto, cuando lo vio me miró con cara de pocos amigos, pero al ver mi emoción pidiéndole que me cebara un mate, colocó la pava para calentar el agua, y cuando ya hervía, procedió a hacer todo el protocolo que él hace cuando lo sirve, que en lo particular me da mucha ternura, pues se lo toma como un verdadero ritual.
Mamá, la primera cebada será para mi - fue su respuesta a mi solicitud, y al preguntarle el por qué, continuó diciendo, es que la primera siempre le corresponde al que ceba! como si fuera un código de honor o algo similar.
Cuando fue mi turno, lo primero que le dije fue que era un atentado, porque el agua estaba hirviendo y casi me quemo, así que luego fui sorbiendo poco a poco. Como no soy alta consumidora del mate, quizás no pueda hacer una gran apreciación comparando con otros, pero este me gustó, pues le siento el sabor a coco, cumpliendo con mis expectativas.
Para mi hijo no fue lo mismo, pues ya está acostumbrado a la marca que consume desde hace tiempo, sin embargo, no se negó a "matear" con su mamá. Esa tarde compartimos un termo completo, en silencio, aunque él veía mis reacciones en cada sorbo, y yo le hacía caras raras, solo para verlo sonreír.

That afternoon we shared a full thermos, in silence, although he saw my reactions to every sip, and I made funny faces at him, just to see him smile.
