Este domingo pasado se celebró el día del niño en Argentina, aunque su celebración empezó una semana antes, en algunas zonas populares que organizaron actividades para el disfrute de los niños, aunque yo (como siempre despistada) perdí la oportunidad de llevar a mi niño.
Pero justo en este punto, surge la pregunta, ¿hasta qué edad se celebra el día del niño? pues evidentemente no todas las actividades que se organizan son para menores de edad, solo para los más pequeños, quedando los adolescentes rezagados de ellas, y aunque llegados a cierta edad se sienten grandes, en el fondo esperan un reconocimiento también.
En casa tengo un niño y un adolescente, pero como siempre les digo a ambos: ellos serán siempre unos niños para mi, por lo que sigo pensando en dos cada vez que compro algo o planifico alguna actividad, aunque el mayor por lo general no le gusta salir conmigo sino con sus amigos.
Hace una semana recibieron los regalos de parte de su padre, y esta semana tocaban los míos, y la idea era sacarlos a comer como suelo hacer para la fecha, pero luego de pagar el alquiler quedé corta de dinero, así que tocó improvisar un poco. Y esta necesidad de cumplir me mantuvo varios días maquinando cómo resolver, hasta dar con algo que sabía les gustaría a los dos.
Lo bueno, es que desde siempre los acostumbré a celebrar cuando se pueda, y para ellos no ha resultado un trauma no hacerlo en las fechas previstas (salvo los cumpleaños que si busco que coincidan los días) así que el regalo les vino como sorpresa, pues no estaban esperándolo para ahora.
Estando en mi trabajo, veo unos tubos de papas fritas que a ellos les encanta, y como mi niño ese día estaba conmigo le pregunté cual sabor prefería él, con su respuesta agarré un tubo y luego otro de otro gusto para su hermano. Su pregunta inmediata fue: ¿y por qué dos? a lo que le dije: ustedes son dos hijos y yo siempre pienso en dos cuando se trata de ustedes.
Lo bonito fue que al momento de darles sus regalos, ambos fueron agradecidos y hasta compartieron conmigo sus papas fritas, por lo que se sintió muy bien poderles dar un presente no tan convencional ni similar a lo que suelo hacer para este día, pues ellos saben que no es solo una vez al año que debemos celebrar la vida y lo que somos.

A week ago, they received gifts from their father, and this week it was my turn. The idea was to take them out to eat, as I usually do on this date, but after paying the rent, I was short on money, so I had to improvise a little. This need to fulfill my obligation kept me thinking for several days about how to solve the problem, until I came up with something I knew they would both like.
The good thing is that I have always encouraged them to celebrate whenever possible, and it has not been traumatic for them not to do so on the scheduled dates (except for birthdays, which I try to make coincide). So the gift came as a surprise, as they were not expecting it at this time.
At work, I saw some bags of potato chips that they love, and since my son was with me that day, I asked him which flavor he preferred. Based on his answer, I grabbed one bag and then another with a different flavor for his brother. Their immediate question was, “Why two?” To which I replied, “You are two children, and I always think of two when it comes to you.”
The nice thing was that when I gave them their gifts, they were both grateful and even shared their potato chips with me, so it felt really good to be able to give them a gift that was not so conventional or similar to what I usually do on this day, because they know that it is not just once a year that we should celebrate life and who we are.
