Today has been a day of tension for many reasons, but also of unexpected surprises that inspire us to remain optimistic.
La jornada en el banco de sangre no fue fructífera. Tres donantes tuvieron que cancelar a ultima hora por razones de fuerza mayor (la hija de dos de ellos fue atropellada por una motocicleta y tuvieron que responder a su propia emergencia médica).
The day at the blood bank was not fruitful. Three donors had to cancel at the last minute due to force majeure (the daughter of two of them was hit by a motorcycle and they had to respond to their own medical emergency).
Un tercer donante venia en camino pero el personal del banco de sangre decidió adelantar media hora el procesamiento de donantes, tiempo después del cual perdían el cupo del día si no habían llegado. Nuestro donante se quedó por fuera.
Esta situación ha sido particularmente frustrante porque aunque los funcionarios del banco de sangre aseguran que no hay presión para llevar donantes para compensar las transfusiones que @manujune ha recibido, dejaron escapar una exclamación respecto de la deuda que le tenemos (60 donantes aprox). Una iniciativa de traer unidades desde el banco de sangre de Cumaná (donde tenemos un gran número de voluntarios dispuestos a donar) fue rechazada debido a posibles complicaciones logísticas.
A third donor was on the way but the blood bank staff decided to move up the donor processing by half an hour, after which time they would lose the day's spot if they had not arrived. Our donor was left out.
This situation has been particularly frustrating because although the blood bank officials claim that there is no pressure to bring in donors to make up for the transfusions @manujune has received, they made it clear that we owe them an outrageous amount of donors (approx. 60).
An initiative to bring units from the Cumaná's blood bank (where we have a large number of volunteers willing to donate) was rejected due to alleged logistical complications.
En medio del cansancio y la frustración de un día en que nuestra paciente amaneció débil y con muchos malestares, recibí una llamada de un viejo amigo de bachillerato. Cándido Longart (Cheo para sus amigos) es sobreviviente de leucemia y de muchas otras patologías. Su mirada serena y cariñosa y sus palabras llenas de sabiduría abriéndose paso a través de las secuelas de sus tanto males me dejaron un profundo sentimiento de alivio. Cheo, mejor que nadie, sabe lo que es superar obstáculos y cada día de su vida, cada paso dificultoso con apoyo de un bastón es un testimonio de su determinación y templanza.
Venía al hospital Vargas a una consulta medica que no se pudo concretar y, a pesar de sus dificultades motoras y de no conocer el hospital, no quiso regresar a su casa sin antes pasar saludándonos.
In the midst of the fatigue and frustration of a day when our patient woke up weak and with many aches and pains, I received a call from an old high school friend. Candido Longart (Cheo to his friends) is a survivor of leukemia and many other pathologies. His serene and loving gaze and his words full of wisdom breaking through the aftermath of his many ailments left me with a deep sense of relief. Cheo, better than anyone, knows what it is to overcome obstacles and every day of his life, every difficult step with the support of a cane is a testimony of his determination and temperance.
He came to Vargas Hospital for a medical consultation that could not be completed and, in spite of his motor difficulties and not knowing his way around the hospital, he did not want to return home without first saying hello to us.
@manukune tuvo unos momentos de calma y normalidad temprano pero luego volvieron los dolores de cabeza y un fuerte olor a thinner inundó todo el pasillo. Al parecer alguna mente brillante autorizó el uso de químicos en una sección que está en reparación a un metro del área donde pacientes con dificultades respiratorias reciben tratamiento y a escasos 20 metros de nuestra habitación.
@manukune had a few moments of calm and normalcy early on but then the headaches returned and a strong smell of thinner flooded the entire hallway. Apparently some brilliant mind authorized the use of chemicals in a section that is under repair a meter away from the area where patients with respiratory difficulties receive treatment and barely 20 meters from our room.
El resultado no se hizo esperar y, entre la transfusión, los malestares habituales de algunas mañanas y el fuerte olor a thinner, nuestra paciente se volvió a debilitar.
The result was not long in coming and, between the transfusion, the usual discomfort of some mornings and the strong smell of thinner, our patient became weak again.

One does not want to be ungrateful because we have certainly received medical care, but there are things that are beyond comprehension and there is little or nothing we can do to change it.
Mientras tanto seguimos sorteando obstáculos. Hoy se solicitó con carácter de urgencia la resonancia magnética que la neuróloga había solicitado hace unos días. La clínica mas cercana no puede realizarla mañana, así que quedará para el viernes a primera hora.
In the meantime, we continue to overcome obstacles. We were urged to produce MRI results that the neurologist had requested a few days ago. The nearest clinic cannot perform it tomorrow, so it will be scheduled for first thing Friday morning.
