Hiking in les Monts du Pilat - My Actifit Report Card: August 10 2025

Hey Actifitters,

When it's too hot to do anything, but you still want to have an active day, what do you do? You go up! You know these hills I keep talking about, we decided to drive up there and go for a hike. Apparently Sam wanted to go too.

But he was limping too much for any kind of long walks, so he had to stay home.

We didn't start early, it was already the afternoon when we headed to the Col de l'Oeillon, a famous place in the Parc Naturel Regional du Pilat. Altitude is around 1200m and many different hikes can start from the parking there. The first good news, the temperature: at the bottom, it was around 38C while it was down to 26C when we parked up there. Still hot but so much better, especially with the breeze. We quickly started our hike, heading in the direction of Cret de la Perdrix, the highest peak in the area, slightly above 1400m.

Even with the sun, it was very pleasant to walk out there on the easy trails.

It often opens up to beautiful views over the entire region.

And when you get to Cret de la Perdrix, the 360 vista is just majestic! In good conditions (I did share another similar hike a couple years ago), you can see the Alps, Mont Blanc... But in spite of the sunny day and blue sky, it was too misty to see that far.

Then we started heading to our next destination, la Jasserie, a nice restaurant perched up there. We still had views of the antenna at Cret de l'Oeillon.

Some old ski runs and lifts are still visible. I have no idea when it stopped operating, quite possibly before my time. Now, with the mild, or even warm winters, there wouldn't be much snow anyways.

And here it is: la Jasserie. This is where I set the pin for worldmappin and travelfeed. One of the specialties is the blueberry pie and of course we had to try it. Very good! It's a popular place though and we had to wait before getting a table. Oh well, it was a nice break in our little hike. If you look very closely on the photo, you might notice on the right side the old structure of a former ski jump.

After this little food break, it was time to walk back via a slightly different trail. A few paragliders were also there to enjoy this beautiful day.

You're getting closer when you can see the details on the antenna (although it's zoomed in a lot here).

And we were back in no time. Overall, over 3 hours, but really just a little more than 2 hours of moving time. A little short of 10km and less than 300meters of elevation gain. In other words, an easy hike, perfect to flee the unbearable heat down below.
After we started driving down, there's a beautiful view of Les 3 Dents (the 3 teeth). It was another possible hike, but as you can see, it's really exposed to the sun, which is why we chose another one (it was mostly in the sun too actually). I think I already used the antenna for AroundTheWorld contest, so I'll choose les 3 Dents this time:

Les Trois Dents, Parc Naturel Regional du Pilat, France

And finally, we finished the day with homemade pizzas, the perfect end to this day. As often, this trip is a hybrid vacations/work, but this whole weekend definitely felt like vacations!
As always, thanks for stopping by and see you tomorrow.
