In 2024, the United States consumed approximately 4,086 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity. This represents a new record. This increase was primarily driven by increased demand from data centers supporting artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency operations, as well as greater electricity usage for heating and transportation (electric vehicles).
Looking ahead, the U.S. Energy Information Administration projects that power consumption will continue to rise, reaching 4,179 billion kWh in 2025 and 4,239 billion kWh in 2026, surpassing previous records
