Today's suggestion is "Father Goriot" by Honoré de Balzac. This magnificent work was published in 1835 and is considered one of its author's most important writings.

Honoré de Balzac was born on May 20, 1799, in Paris, France. He was a French novelist and playwright, a representative of the so-called realist novel of the 19th century. A tireless worker, he produced a monumental work, The Human Comedy, a coherent cycle of several dozen novels. He died on August 18, 1850.

Father Goriot. It is part of The Human Comedy and is a faithful example of a completely Realist work, where the power of money for the bourgeoisie is manifested in the most forceful way. It is the story of both Rastignac and Goriot, and also of Paris in 1819, where the action takes place. It tells the parallel stories of an old man – Goriot – who descends into spiritual and moral demise, a victim of the circumstances he himself helped to create, and of a young man – Rastignac – determined to make a career and succeed in Paris, initially facing a society that rejects him for "not being and not having," but which in the end, despite his defiance, embraces him and makes him forever one of the favorites of the elegant salons.

Among its main characters are: Rastignac: a young man from the provinces, the son of a noble but impoverished family. He goes to Paris to study law and discovers a society and people who are driven solely by money. His sweet, modest, and sentimental nature suffers a harsh shock. A negative change occurs within him. He strives to acquire wealth. He deprives his family of their savings in order to gain entry into society.

Vautrin is a strong, muscular man with a deep, determined gaze. A great connoisseur of the human soul and society, he uses this knowledge to live outside the law, obeying no other but his own. His behavior reflects the negative impact of society on man; he doesn't hesitate to kill to achieve his goal: to obtain money.

Goriot is an old pasta maker, retired from business, selfless, and kind. He lives to provide for his daughters, which is why he resides in the boarding house after being ruined by them. His boundless love makes him a martyr of fatherhood and a symbol. He is the living embodiment of the past and present that Rastignac experiences.

The daughters (Delfhine and Anastasie) are beautiful sisters who represent coolness and victory, forces opposed to their father's weakness. They belong to high society: Anastasie marries Restaud, an aristocratic count, and Delfhine marries Nuncingen, a banker of German origin. They are always preoccupied with themselves and their own problems. They hate and despise each other just as they did their father, ashamed of him, and they distance themselves from him. Through them, the loss of filial love is evident.

Here is a synopsis of the novel:

A group of people live in Madame Vauquer's boarding house, located in Paris, the capital of France. The rooms are assigned according to the amount of money they possess, in ascending order. The rooms are distributed across three floors and an attic. There is no distinction of sex or age for being a guest at the boarding house, located in the "most horrible and unknown" neighborhood of the city. Father Goriot lives there with his two daughters who don't love their father; they are only interested in the money he can provide. When he can no longer offer them anything, they reject him and despise him. Meanwhile, a young man, Eugene Rastignac, who has come to climb the social ladder at any cost, is the only one who accompanies the old man in his death. The novel portrays society in its most degrading aspects.

“Father Goriot” perfectly depicted the conflicts between all the classes active in bourgeois France in the first half of the 19th century and, with excellent insight, also dissected the internal contradictions and characteristics of each social group.

Un saludo a todos mis amigos lectores, hoy nos volvemos a encontrar en el rinconcito del libro. Hoy les traigo una propuesta de índole universal, donde apreciaremos los valores y anti valores de una sociedad corrompida.

La propuesta de hoy se titula “Papá Goriot” del escritor Honoré de Balzac. Esta magestuosa obra fue publicada en 1835, considerada una de los escritos más importantes de su autor.

Honoré de Balzac nació el 20 de mayo de 1799 en París- Francia,fue un novelista y dramaturgo francés, representante de la llamada novela realista  del siglo xix. Trabajador infatigable, elaboró una obra monumental La comedia humana ciclo coherente de varias decenas de novelas. Fallece el 18 de agosto de 1850.

Papá Goriot . Está insertada dentro de La Comedia Humana y es una fiel muestra de una obra enteramente Realista, el poder del dinero para la burguesía se manifiesta de la manera más contundente. Es la historia tanto de Rastignac como de Goriot y también del París de 1819, en que tiene lugar la acción. Nos narra la historia paralela de un anciano – Goriot- que desciende hasta su muerte espiritual y moral, víctima de las circunstancias que él mismo ayudara a cimentar, y de un joven – Rastignac- decidido a hacer carrera y a triunfar en París, enfrentando inicialmente una sociedad que no lo acepta por “no ser y no tener”, pero que al final, a pesar de su reto, se lo traga y lo convierte para siempre en uno más entre los favoritos de los salones elegantes. 

Entre sus personajes principales se encuentra: Rastignac: es un joven provinciano, hijo de una familia noble, pero empobrecida. Va a París a estudiar derecho y descubre la sociedad y a las personas que sólo actúan promovidos por el dinero. Al final su carácter dulce, modesto, sentimental ha sufrido un rudo choque. Se ha operado un cambio negativo en él. Se afana por alcanzar dinero. Despoja a su familia de los ahorros con tal de penetrar en la sociedad.

Vautrin es un hombre fuerte y musculoso, tenía una mirada profunda y llena de decisión. Gran conocedor del alma humana y de la sociedad, se aprovecha de esos conocimientos para vivir al margen de la ley y sin obedecer otra que la suya. Su conducta es el reflejo de la incidencia negativa de la sociedad en el hombre, no le importa matar para logra su propósito: obtener dinero.

Goriot es un viejo fabricante de fideo, retirado de los negocios, desinteresado, bondadoso, vive para satisfacer las necesidades de sus hijas, por eso radica en la pensión después de haberse arruinado por causa de ellas, su amor desmedido hace que se convierta en el mártir de la paternidad y en un símbolo. Es la representación viva del pasado y el presente que vive Rastignac. 

Las hijas (Delfhine y Anastasie) son hermanas de buena apariencia, representan la frialdad y la victoria, como fuerzas opuestas a la debilidad del padre, pertenecen a la alta sociedad, pues Anastasie se casa con Restaud, aristocrático conde y Delfhine con Nuncingen, banquero de origen alemán, siempre están pendientes de sí y de sus problemas. Ambas se odian y se repudian igual que lo hacían con su padre, se avergonzaban de él, lo apartan y a través de ellas se aprecia la pérdida del amor filial.

A continuación te dejo una sinopsis de la novela:  Un grupo de personas habitan en la pensión de la Señora Vauquer, ubicada en París, capital de Francia. En ella los inquilinos ocupan los cuartos en correspondencia con la cantidad de dinero que posean en orden ascendente. Allí están distribuidos en tres pisos y una buhardilla, no hay distinción de sexo o edad para ser huésped de la pensión, ubicada en el barrio “más horrible y desconocido” de la ciudad. En ella habita Papá Goriot quien tiene dos hijas que no quieren al padre, sólo les interesa el dinero que les pueda proporcionar. Cuando este ya no tiene qué ofrecerles no es aceptado por ellas, lo desprecian, a la par hay un joven, Eugene Rastignac que ha venido a subir en la escala social a cualquier precio y es quien único acompaña al anciano en su muerte. Se muestra el cuadro de la sociedad en sus aspectos más degradantes.

“Papá Goriot “,dibujó a la perfección los conflictos entre todas las clases actuantes en la Francia burguesa de la primera mitad del siglo XIX y con excelente penetración, desmenuza también las contradicciones internas y las características de cada grupo social.
