Many people believe based on general understanding that when a person dies in Christ, they immediately go to heaven to enjoy eternal rest, while those who die without Christ go straight to hell to suffer for their wrongdoings. Because of this common belief, it is often assumed that anyone who “rested in the Lord” is already in heaven.
According to book of John 3:13 “And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.”
However, this is not what the Scriptures actually teach. According to the Bible, no one is in heaven yet except the Lord Jesus Christ, along with the thief who was beside Him during the crucifixion the one Jesus promised would be with Him in paradise that same day.
The Bible also mentions three heavens, which means the word “heaven” does not refer to just one place.
Everyone who died in the Lord before the day of judgment goes first to an unknown place, where they remain until judgment. On that day, each person will be judged according to the Book of Life and by the deeds they committed on earth.
This applies to both the righteous and the wicked those who lived according to God’s will and those who did wrong and were not redeemed. The difference is that this “unknown place” serves as a temporary realm where both groups experience a preview of what they deserve whether good or bad based on how they lived.
Brother Eli once explained the concept of the three heavens, and I believe this “unknown land” may be one of the heavens he referred to. I’ll wait for the next part of his teaching to understand more about it.
