Greetings everyone! I’m glad to take part in this week’s HiveGhana prompt titled “Blue Collar Jobs.”
Nowadays, many people focus only on getting white collar jobs because they believe those jobs are more comfortable or prestigious. Some even go as far as buying multiple job forms and attending countless interviews, yet nothing seems to work out. This is because many still hold the mindset that without a white-collar job, one cannot succeed but that’s far from the truth.
I remember a few years ago, after graduating from the university and completing my NYSC, I also chased after white-collar jobs. I applied for several positions and attended numerous interviews, hoping that once I got one, my life would completely change. Unfortunately, none of those efforts yielded any result.
One day, I met an old university friend who was among the best students in our set. To my surprise, he was running a small POS business by the roadside. At first, I was shocked and wondered how such a brilliant graduate could end up doing that kind of work. But when I spoke with him, he explained that after searching for jobs without success, he decided to start something on his own. He then advised me to stop depending solely on white-collar opportunities and instead find capital to start a small business.
Taking his advice, I ventured into the building materials business a few months later. It wasn’t easy at first. I faced many challenges but I stayed determined. Over time, the business began to grow, and today, I’m proud to say I have multiple branches across my state. Through this business, I’ve been able to build a house, buy cars, and support others all because I let go of the mindset that only white-collar jobs can bring success.
To all the youths still chasing white-collar jobs endlessly, my advice is simple: learn a skill or start something small. Not everyone will work in an office, but everyone can succeed through hard work, creativity, and determination.
