What Do Natural Disasters Tell Us?
The earth was originally created by God in perfect order. It was not always the way we see it now. To understand this, let’s look back at the time of Noah. Most believers accept that the flood described in the Bible was a global flood, not just a local one. A natural disaster of that scale cannot be compared to a local flood caused by something like a dam breaking. For example, when a dam collapses and wipes out a village, that is considered a man-made disaster not a natural one.
During Noah’s time, there were no dams. So even if someone argues the flood was local, it would still be classified as a natural disaster and not something caused by human engineering.
But how should we understand such a massive disaster? In Genesis 7:11, the Bible describes the breaking of the “fountains of the great deep,” releasing waters from beneath the earth. This aligns with what science now understands as the movement of the earth’s tectonic plates giant sections of the earth’s crust that shift and sometimes collide, triggering earthquakes.
According to the biblical account, when the deep sources of water broke open and rain poured from the heavens for forty days and forty nights, it created the greatest flood in human history destroying nearly all life except for Noah and his family aboard the ark.
God created the earth in perfect condition. Everything He made was “very good.” The world was not originally designed to be shaken by earthquakes, tsunamis, or other destructive natural events. So why do these disasters exist now? The understanding is that human transgressions sin and moral decline have contributed to the disruption of the earth’s natural harmony.
