I love this topic. I don't know, but then, I would be writing from what I lived and experienced back then on campus. So, if I could invent an app to make student life better, what would it be? I have a lot on my mind, but let's go for this two. 1: Queue Manager. 2: Past Questions & Material App.
I won't want to say it's limited to my school; I want to believe every student in a Nigerian institution would definitely know the stress and hurdles of getting their payments done, doing final submission, registering, and the like. When you have to visit the bursary office or the clearance department or those to whom you submit your files, or even the appeal office in case you have issues, you know how long you queue; you can waste a whole day under the hot sun standing in line and still not get called in or get to do what you want to do.
There was a day I came all the way from my hostel because I stay off campus throughout my year in school. I came to school that particular day to get all my things sorted out; I came prepared. I was just thinking I won't meet too many people, and I don't really have much to do, just to sign and submit a file...that's all. I got there, and they hadn't even opened. By the time they came, we were many already, and students began to push themselves, thereby scattering the lines. Those who are inside and are supposed to attend to us again started coming out to bring in/call in students they know. At the end of the day, we were told to come back the following day, and I had already planned to go for the next submission in another office the following day.
I might not even be angry and sad if we were being attended to accordingly, but the part that somebody who knows somebody would just come in, greet the officials or call them from outside, and they would attend to him immediately—that is bad. We are humans too, and you leave us sweating outside while playing long leg and favoritism.
Having a queue manager app would help. All that is needed is just to log in to the app and select from the list of offices that best fits what you want to sort and queue. Immediately you click, you would get to see your number and position; you can even do that from the comfort of your home, so you know you can choose to leave early or not, and you also get notifications when it's almost your turn. It would be one that's built to be very transparent and will also help students to attend lectures, take their time to do other things, and all.
Now, to the second app that would help students: Past Questions & Material App.
In my own school back then, you needed to have very good seniors that you were close with that would have helped you save their question papers after each exam and would hand them over to you when they were done so you could practice and prepare ahead when you were at that level too. Some of us who are not that close with seniors often run around snapping photos of this and these, just to be able to have an idea of the questions that could be asked. Some even go to the extent of doing photocopies. The reason why we do that is because those lecturers often repeat either one or two questions from the past ones.
Now, imagine if there was an app that you could log in to and have access to every past question, say from the last 4 years or more. Where all students, no matter what course you are doing, would have access to a very good number of past questions, materials, and such. As it would help students to stop running around when an exam is nearby; it would also save the cost of going to do photocopies and reduce the stress of finding past questions.
Those are the two apps I would love to talk about. There are more, but the truth is, the list will definitely be endless. Those two may look small, but believe me, they would solve a very big problem faced by the students on a daily basis. It would save students from wasting their time, it would help them concentrate and have time for their academics, while saving them from favoritism and inequality.
Assuming these existed when I was still in school, school life would have been different; it wouldn't have been so stressful, and it would have allowed us to do much better.
