I do not want to be remembered as someone who had it all. And, of a truth I don't even know anything. I still surf and search the internet for things, nobody knows it all, and as I would always, "I am a work in progress." I don't have it all figured out.
So, how do I want to be remembered? I want to be remembered as the person who made hearts feel lighter,I want to be remembered as the person who made others smile, I want to be remembered as someone whose presence brings about relief. I want to be remembered as that person who makes you laugh even when everything does not look like it.
I want people to say, “That guy Toyosi, he's the best guy I've ever seen.” I’ve met a lot of people who live life like a shadow of themselves. I want to be that guy who lights up faces, even if just for a moment. I want to be remembered as the guy who always visits with something, no matter how small. I want to be remembered as that guy who never came around empty-handed. I want to be remembered for the way I listened, I want to be remembered as the guy who motivates, who inspires, who shows up....
I want to be remembered for my loud and most times embarrassing laughter that made people join in even without knowing why. I want people to remember I wasn’t perfect, I want people to remember I made mistakes but that I never let those mistakes define me. I want my friends to remember how we survived school together, eating indomie together in a small pot, telling ourselves we’d be rich someday, because we won't give up.
Also, I want strangers to remember me as that person who helped them carry their load or paid their transport fare when they were stranded. I want them to remember me as someone who told them to not give up and keep going. These things matter to me a lot.
Because when I’m gone, I don’t want people to wear black on black and cry. I want them to gather, eat, laugh and tell stories about me, stories like....“You won’t believe what Toyosi did that day…” "You won't believe what Toyosi told me..." If I can leave behind love, laughter, kindness, and the kind of spark that makes people keep going while believing that better days are coming, then I’ll know I was here for a reason. And that is exactly how I want to be remembered.
