Two School Memories I'll Never Forget.

You will very well agree with me that school life is stressful, as it is filled with ups and downs. In between all of those, there are certain moments that stay with one for long; they are either funny or too unforgettable a moment to erase. I have a lot of those moments, though, but I will be sharing two of them. One was funny, and the other almost broke me.

So, it happened that it was one of those sapa moments in school. In my school, then, we do call it Igbeyin poly. When you hear any student say such, just know everywhere is dry, no foodstuffs, no money, nothing. That slang is used mostly towards the end of the semester when all you bring from home has finished. So on this particular day, I was just too hungry; I only drank garri the day before. My next-door neighbor, who usually helped me with food and the like, was down too.

That morning she knocked on my door. I dragged my weak body up to open the door for her, and she told me she's going to her boyfriend's place till evening. Immediately she closed the door, an alert entered, a friend of mine sent me ₦2500, and immediately I rushed out and called out to her. I told her to help buy the popular plate of item 7 rice along. She even wanted to suggest I buy something else, but I said no, if this will be my last moment, I should eat something good.

She returned in the evening and knocked; she entered the room carrying three packs of rice. She dropped two on my reading table and sat down on the bed to eat one. I was confused. So I asked her, “What happened? Why two plates?”

She looked at me as if that question shocked her and responded, “You asked me to buy you a plate of rice now, and my boyfriend bought one for you as well.”

At that point, I didn't know which to settle for, either to get angry or be grateful. Since your boyfriend already bought one for me, why go ahead and buy me another? I was so hungry to the extent that I was so happy and angry at the same time. She could have just brought back my ₦2500, and it would have helped cover the next day. Whenever I remember that day, I just laugh.

But then again, some memories aren't funny at all. It happened that I had an encounter with a lecturer in my school. He wasn't my course/departmental lecturer; they were making use of our class that day, and I needed to take something, so I went through the back door, took what I forgot, and turned back. That was how he called out to me and said I was disturbing him. I don't really seem to understand, so I told him I was sorry that that was why I used the back door and that I didn't even disturb most of the students in his class that day. I didn't even know I came in to pick anything, so it sounded somehow to my hearing, and before I knew what was happening, he had flared up, saying he's talking and I'm talking as well; he began to mention the names of my lecturers, level advisor, HOD, and the like. To make matters worse, our exam officer walked by at that time, and I had already had a small issue with him as well. That was how everything became yam pepper scatter scatter.

That was how they both joined hands to talk down on me while promising me I wouldn't graduate. Those words hit me. I pleaded with them, but they wouldn't listen. From that moment on I became very serious. I attended class regularly, made sure I did all tests and assignments, and all. I didn't want to give them a reason to really fail me. I even read beyond normal, not just to pass, but to make sure that even if the results came out and they were bad, I would at least have the courage to face him and ask to be reviewed.

Well, I wasn't sure I could win against them. I had a family member as one of the directors in the school, but I wasn't the visit me type, so I didn't want to involve him, at least not yet. But then, at the end, all their threats didn't come to pass, even though they almost did. I graduated with flying colors, but later my grade was changed. I had to go back and sort things out. They checked from the beginning and adjusted it; all thanks to God, I got to see it early before our certificate was out, and it was rectified.

School life isn't easy at all. There are days you laugh, there are days you frown, there are days you will be annoyed for no reason at all, there are days you will be hungry, and there are times Sapa will hold you. These two, I believe, are the most memorable moments I had in school.

All pictures are mine.
