So, one Saturday evening, I and my friend were really hungry, like the hunger was really dealing with us, and both of us can eat enh, we are not roommates but we are most times always together. Not even next door neighbor, he's my next house neighbor😁, he came to my room that day to rant and I ranted back at him, we all are facing this Nigeria. After scattering everywhere, I laid my hands on three nylons, two had rice inside of it, while the third one has garri inside, we measured the rice and it was exactly two cups, well, we had to settle for it. Maybe we will take the garri the following morning.
So, we decided to cook concoction rice, you know the type of rice you cook and pour every ingredients inside to cook at once. We poured it on fire and prayed our gas would cook it finish. My friend was of the opinion that rice like that that has stayed long in he house would be dry and has the tendency of rising well😁, so we should put much water. Well, me I never heard of that, but I gave in and poured some more water in.
The rice began to cook whole we talked so as to let time fly, the aroma the food was emitting was on another level. We checked and it isn't done yet, we checked again and it was done, but guess what, the water hadn't dried. Come and see rice floating in water. We looked at each other in the eyes, not knowing who to blame.
“That rice na fake, he suppose rise, but then… wetin we go do now?” my friend asked.
I looked into the oot again and thought for some second, then inspiration came running, the garri. Yes, we would dish out foods into bowl like plates and pour Garri inside. It would help absorb the water and also fill our stomach.
And that was how we poured garri inside our cooked soggy rice and mixed it. Come and see us laughing at ourselves, it was as if we wanted to eat alien dish.
“Abeg, how will this taste?” my friend asked.
I just smiled, and responded, “oga, beta fetch like four cups of water, we go chop am dey drink water."
I took my first bite and my eyes opened wide. The garri actually added some crunchy vibe to the soft rice, what a balanced diet this was.
“Omo… e no too bad o” my friend said smiling as he ate.
Me, at my end, I was chewing slowly cause I don't even trust that garri to not have sand or little little stones. Only God knows how long I've forgotten it there.
"Na wa o, who go even believe day this kain combo dey exist." My friend said. I just looked at him, nothing hunger no fit cause.
I just started laughing suddenly, my friend didn't know why, he looked up shocked and joined in to, we laughed uncontrollably, and in-between the laughs I voiced out, "just imagine someone comes in now and meet us eating this, surrounded with cups of water.."
"No long cap, we dey do experiment." My friend replied and we continue laughing.
My stomach was starting to complain, but I didn't even listen to it. Hunger is nobody's mate. I kept washing it down with water😁.
“Bro, I neva chop rice wey full me like this before o" my friend said.
When we finished eating, we sat down sweating, shirtless and with stomach protruding. Come and see how littered everywhere is, the garri did increased the rice, we still have more left, it was like when Rabbi fed the five thousand and they still have much left.
I hope you are able to pick something from this, anytime you cook rice and it seems the water wouldn't dry up, just add garri and you are good to go. It works sincerely, just that I've never tried it again since then 😁😁. But you know, when you are broke, hungry and didn't know what to do, rice and garri won't look trash to you. Trust me.
