Giant Windmills of Carsington Meadows, Derbyshire, UK

The last couple of weeks in England has seen our erratic weather lurch up to 27c, plummet to 7c, then soar back to 27*c again for this weekend.

Today we celebrated the heatwave by going for a walk with our friend Miles to Carsington Meadows, which Miles calls 'the land of the giants'.

The 'giants' are wind turbines, set into the hillside to produce 'green' electricity. The tiny tree in the above picture is the tree @danpaulson is stood next to in the photo below, which shows you their scale!

Wind turbines operate on a simple principle. The energy in the wind turns two or three propeller-like blades around a rotor. The rotor is connected to the main shaft, which spins a generator to create electricity.

Miles feels that windmills are very beautiful, with a simple grace and elegant design.
