In this section, I will no longer be handing out STARBITS, as those entries are not allowed. However, I will continue to share high-quality songs, share how I discovered them, and share some interesting facts about them. To top it all off, I will also include several tables with the statistics compiled by the Rising Star game.
Since May, I have been creating a playlist to keep track of the latest songs I have discussed in my posts. This will help me remember whether I have already talked about a song before or not. The most recent one is A Sky Full Of Stars from the succesfull band Coldplay
Pibe Cantina: Yerba Brava
My song of choice on Spotify for today's post is Pibe Cantina from the argentine cumbia group Yerba Brava.
For my selection today, I wanted to change things up quite a bit and bring in a genre that I have rarely featured. About six or seven years ago, when I was still in high school, I remember we were in a citizenship class and we were listening to cultural music. At first, the teacher played a classic tango as an example of older popular music, but then she played a song called Pibe Cantina by a group called Yerba Brava.
Yerba Brava is a well-known group within the cumbia villera genre, although it stands out because its lyrics tend to be more wholesome compared to other exponents of the genre, such as Pibes Chorros. In class, we had to analyze one of their songs, trying to understand the criticism and background of the lyrics. In this case, the song is about someone who left the neighborhood and, now that he has money, no longer hangs out with the people he grew up with. This is where the term "Pibe cantina" comes from, which is the title of the song.
Before listening to the song in class, I was familiar with what I consider to be the group's most successful song: La Cumbia de los Trapos. That song is a kind of anthem for all Argentine soccer fans, and it was pretty good.
Despite having brought a cumbia villera song, I'm not usually a big fan of this genre. In general, many of the lyrics glorify crime too much, and both the instrumental part and the themes tend to lack creativity.

Yerba Brava is one of Argentina's best-known cumbia villera groups. They began making music in 1999, releasing their first album, Cumbia Villera. This album includes several of their most iconic songs, such as Pibe Cantina, Vago Atorrante, and La Cumbia de los Trapos.
Thanks to this album, the band achieved great success and continued to fill venues with numerous concerts for over a decade. Although they released other songs in the following years that enjoyed some success, they were never able to match the impact and importance of their debut.
Pibe Cantina from Yerba Brava has 61 million plays on Spotify, while on YouTube, it has reached one million views (at least the group's official video).
