Galaxy Zoo is a citizen science project that has been active since 2007. It allows anyone, without prior knowledge, to help astronomers in the arduous task of classifying the shape and structure of galaxies based on astronomical images. The project had been somewhat forgotten almost twenty years after its inception, but now the James Webb Telescope is generating a huge amount of new data, so the project has been reactivated.

In this new phase, relaunched in May 2025, the project will focus on the more than 300,000 images obtained by JWST, primarily from the ambitious COSMOS-Web survey. Thanks to Webb's infrared capabilities, images have been obtained that show galaxies so distant that we see them as they were billions of years ago, allowing scientists to study how their shapes evolved and what processes prevailed at different cosmic epochs.
En esta nueva etapa, relanzada en mayo de 2025, el proyecto se centrará en las más de 300,000 imágenes obtenidas por el JWST, principalmente del ambicioso sondeo COSMOS-Web. Gracias a las capacidad en el rango del infrarrojo del Webb, se han obtenido imágenes quenmuestran galaxias tan lejanas que las vemos como eran hace miles de millones de años, permitiendo a los científicos estudiar cómo evolucionaron sus formas y qué procesos predominaron en distintas épocas cósmicas.

The Galaxy Zoo app is simple to use. It will show you a real image captured by JWST and ask you to select its shape from several options (spiral, elliptical, irregular, etc.). You will then have to answer a few simple questions about the structure you observe. Your answers will be combined with those of other volunteers, ensuring the reliability of the data and allowing scientists to analyze large-scale trends.
El sistema de funcionamiento del Galaxy Zoo es sencillo, la aplicación te mostrará una imagen real capturada por el JWST y te pedirá que selecciones su forma entre varias opciones (si es espiral, elíptica, irregular, etc.) y tienes que responder unas preguntas sencillas sobre la estructura que observas. Tus respuestas se combinarán con las de otros voluntarios, lo que garantiza la confiabilidad de los datos y permite a los científicos analizar tendencias a gran escala.
If you want to participate, all you need is a computer or other device with internet access, access the official Galaxy Zoo website (below), and register for free. Below is a short tutorial showing you examples of the different types of galaxies mentioned in the previous paragraph and how to recognize them and include them in one classification group or another. You can then start classifying galaxies and helping NASA.
Si quieres participar, lo único que necesitas es una computadora u otro dispositivo con acceso a internet, acceder al sitio oficial de Galaxy Zoo (que te dejo abajo) y registrarte de forma gratuita. Seguidamente hay un pequeño turorial en el que te muestran ejemplos de distintos tipos de galaxias mencionados en el párrafo anterior y cómo reconocerlas para incluirlas en uno u otro grupo de clasificación. Now I suppose you're wondering: if artificial intelligences are so smart and so powerful, why do mortals like you and me have to help NASA classify galaxies? Well, the fact is that they need us to label the initial data so that, later, AIs like ZooBot in Galaxy Zoo can be trained using reinforcement learning and be able to classify them reliably and autonomously.
Ahora supongo que os estareis preguntando: si las inteligencias artificiales son tan listas y tan potentes, ¿por qué tenemos los mortales como tú y como yo que aydar a la NASA a clasificar las galaxias?.
