Afro hairstyles are more than a simple trend—they are a celebration. Curls, dreadlocks, braids—all have resurged powerfully on our island, adapting to modern styles, though braids are the ones that most capture attention.
The origin of braiding traces back to ancestral times, when braids were used not only as a form of aesthetic expression but also as a means of communication and rebellion. Each style mapped routes or hid sustenance resources that would help people begin new journeys.
Today, these styles not only beautify—they reflect identities. Some ventures have emerged, becoming spaces of culture and art, while social media has let their work cross borders, reaching a global audience. In this way, every hairstyle tells a story rich with history, culture, and creativity.

Cuando comencé a hacer mi proyecto fotográfico de retratos afrodescendientes tenía claro que no lo hacía por moda. Investigué, fui conociendo personas y poco a poco me fui adentrando en un mundo que crece cada día.
Los peinados afro, más que una simple tendencia son una celebración. Rizos, dreadlocks, trenzados, todos han resurgido con fuerza en nuestra isla, adaptándose a los estilos modernos, pero son estos últimos los que más llaman la atención.
El origen de los trenzados se remonta a tiempos ancestrales, donde las trenzas eran utilizadas más que un medio de expresión estética, como una forma de comunicación y rebeldía. Cada peinado mostraba caminos u ocultaba alimentos que servirían para comenzar nuevas historias.
Hoy, estos estilos no sólo embellecen, sino que reflejan identidades.
