Hello, fellow travelers. Have you ever been traveling around a place for a long time and not noticed the existence of structures, sculptures, and even buildings? This happens when we walk quickly without looking around in detail; we miss truly interesting things.
A few days ago, while strolling through the cobblestone streets of Old Havana, something new caught my attention at the intersection of Oficios and Baratillo streets: a stone sculpture that I hadn't previously noticed. As if it hadn't been there, it seemed to have revealed itself only to me at that moment.
The sculpture is located in a small square surrounded by elegant buildings, some from the colonial era and others from the first decade of the 20th century, a few meters from the San Francisco de Asís Square, which I have often visited without noticing this small square and its sculptural gem.
Its beauty and symbolism led me to investigate its history, and today I want to share it with you.
This is the Galician Cross, a traditional Franciscan sculpture composed of a stone cross that is often placed at crossroads to bless the paths, serving as healing points for the body and spirit. Its structure is usually divided into three parts: base, pole, and cross, and while some are simple, others, like ours, are authentic works of art carved in stone.
This cruceiro, 7.5 meters high and weighing 12 tons, was donated by Manuel Fraga Iribarne, then president of the Galician Regional Government, and inaugurated in 2000. The work was created by stonemasons from Pontevedra, at the Escola de Canteiros de Poio, and transported piece by piece to Havana, where it was assembled by students from the Escuela Taller de La Habana.
Its location is no coincidence: the cruceiro was erected as a symbol of encounter and memory. One of the surrounding buildings, the Casteleiro Vizoso, belonged to Galician businessmen, owners of a major hardware store that sold various naval and agricultural products, among others, imported from the nearby port.
This cross is more than a sculpture; it is a tribute to the Galician ancestors who came to Cuba and integrated into its culture and society. In its carvings, we can recognize the images of Saint Christopher and Saint James, patron saints of Havana, as well as Saint Anthony, Saint Francis, and the Immaculate Conception, patron saint of our city's Cathedral. The octagonal base pays homage to the Cathedral of Santiago de Cuba, also built by Galician emigrants.
Today, the cross is not only a tourist attraction, but a place of meditation and connection with history. Surrounded by doves, colonial buildings, and the echo of the bay, it invites you to pause and contemplate the ties between Galicia and Cuba, two lands united by the sea and history.
For me, discovering this monument reminded me that sometimes the most fascinating stories are hidden in plain sight, waiting for someone to admire them and give them a voice.

**Cruceiro Gallego: un hallazgo interesante en la Habana Vieja**
Hola amigos viajeros. ¿Les ha pasado que, aunque recorren un lugar por largo tiempo, no se han percatado de la existencia de estructuras, esculturas e incluso edificios? Esto sucede cuando caminamos apurados sin mirar detalladamente alrededor, nos perdemos cosas realmente interesantes.
Hace unos días, mientras paseaba por las adoquinadas calles de la Habana Vieja, algo nuevo captó mi atención en la intersección de las calles Oficios y Baratillo: una escultura tallada en piedra que anteriormente no había visto, como si no hubiese estado ahí, parecía haberse revelado solo para mí en ese momento.
La escultura se encuentra en una plazoleta pequeña rodeada de edificios elegantes, algunos de la época colonial y otros de la primera década del siglo 20, a pocos metros de la Plaza de San Francisco de Asís, que muchas veces he visitado sin darme cuenta de esta pequeña plazoleta y su joya escultórica.
Su belleza y simbolismo me llevaron a investigar su historia, y hoy quiero compartirla contigo.
Se trata del Cruceiro Gallego, escultura tradicional franciscana, compuestos por una cruz de piedra que suele colocarse en encrucijadas de caminos para bendecir los caminos, sirviendo como puntos de sanación para el cuerpo y el espíritu. Su estructura suele dividirse en tres partes: base, vara y cruz, y aunque algunos son sencillos, otros, como el nuestro, son auténticas obras de arte labradas en piedra.
Este cruceiro, con sus 7.5 metros de altura y 12 toneladas de peso, fue donado por Manuel Fraga Iribarne, entonces presidente de la Junta de Galicia, e inaugurado en el 2000. La obra fue creada por canteros de Pontevedra, en la Escola de Canteiros de Poio, y transportada pieza por pieza hasta La Habana, donde fue ensamblada por alumnos de la Escuela Taller de La Habana.
Su ubicación no es casual: el cruceiro se erigió como un símbolo de encuentro y memoria. Uno de los edificios que lo rodea, el Casteleiro Vizoso, perteneció a empresarios gallegos, dueños de una importante ferretería donde se comerciaban diferentes artículos navales y agrícolas, entre otros, importados desde el puerto cercano.
El cruceiro habanero es más que una escultura; es un homenaje a los antepasados gallegos que llegaron a Cuba y se integraron en su cultura y sociedad. En sus tallas, podemos reconocer las imágenes de San Cristóbal y Santiago, patrones de La Habana, así como San Antonio, San Francisco y la Inmaculada Concepción, patrona de la Catedral de nuestra ciudad. La base, de forma octogonal, rinde homenaje a la Catedral de Santiago de Cuba, también construida por emigrantes gallegos.
Hoy, el cruceiro no solo es un punto de interés turístico, sino un lugar de meditación y conexión con la historia. Rodeado de palomas, edificios coloniales y el eco de la bahía, invita a detenerse y contemplar los lazos entre Galicia y Cuba, dos tierras unidas por el mar y la historia.
Para mí, descubrir este monumento fue recordar que, a veces, las historias más fascinantes están escondidas a plena luz, esperando que alguien las admire y les dé voz.
