Hello dear friends, today I'm joining our friend @tattoodjay's challenge to share my Wednesday stroll along Mercaderes Street, one of the most picturesque and visited streets in Old Havana.
Since the 18th century, this street has been very popular due to the presence of countless shops and merchants selling exotic products brought in from the Havana port.
Today, it remains popular for its variety of museums, galleries, restaurants, and souvenir shops, and because it retains its colonial soul as if time had stood still.
It only covers a few blocks, but every step is a journey: from the majestic Cathedral Square to the vibrant Old Square, two of the historic center's important squares.
Among its treasures, one stands out for its grandeur: the **Mural of Personalities**. Inaugurated in 2000, this masterpiece by Cuban artist Andrés Carrillo is not just art, it's a time machine.
It's impressive to see a mural with 67 life-size figures representing illustrious figures from the Cuban colonial era—doctors, politicians, artists, writers, poets—who, although they never coincided in the same era, now "coexist" in a frozen scene in front of the Palace of the Marquis of Arco. In fact, the entire façade of this palace is reflected in the work.
The most curious and innovative aspect is the revolutionary technique employed, unique in Cuba. The artist Andrés Carrillo used a mixture of natural stone and acrylic resin to withstand the strong Caribbean sun and rain. 25 years later, the mural looks freshly painted!
Another surprising detail is that with only four colors (brown, coral pink, black, and light beige), he achieved 13 shades, which seem to reproduce a sepia photograph.
I love stopping to look at this work. It's like a promenade scene in front of the Palace: women in ruffled dresses, men in frock coats, some leaning out of balconies... I focus on the mural and even think I can hear the creaking of carriages on the street!
This mural isn't just a tribute to illustrious figures of the past; it's a dialogue between the most important people of bygone eras. Having them all together allows us to remember the valuable legacies each one left us.
This street is still very busy, and this mural is a must-see for everyone because it exudes art with a vibrant scene from the colonial era.

**Paseo por la calle Mercaderes: Un mural de belleza sinigual**
Hola queridos amigos, hoy me uno al reto de nuestro amigo @tattoodjay para compartir mi paseo del miércoles por la calle Mercaderes, una de las calles más pintorescas y visitadas de La Habana Vieja.
Desde el siglo XVIII, esta calle ha sido muy concurrida debido a la presencia de innumerables tiendas y mercaderes que vendían exóticos productos llegados al puerto habanero.
Hoy, sigue siendo muy frecuentada por la variedad de museos, galerías, restaurantes y tiendas de suvenires y porque conserva su alma colonial como si el tiempo no hubiese pasado.
Recorre apenas unas cuadras, pero cada paso es un viaje: desde la majestuosa Plaza de la Catedral hasta la vibrante Plaza Vieja, dos de las plazas importantes del casco histórico.
Entre sus tesoros, uno destaca por su grandiosidad: el **Mural de las Personalidades**. Inaugurado en el año 2000, esta obra maestra del artista cubano Andrés Carrillo no es solo arte, es una máquina del tiempo.
Es impresionante ver un mural con 67 figuras a tamaño natural, que representan a figuras ilustres de la época colonial cubana, — médicos, políticos, artistas, escritores, poetas— que, aunque nunca coincidieron en la misma época, ahora "conviven" en una escena congelada frente al Palacio del Marqués de Arco. De hecho, en la obra se refleja toda la fachada de este Palacio.
Lo más curioso y renovador es la técnica revolucionaria empleada, única en Cuba. El artista Andrés Carrillo usó una mezcla de piedra natural y resina acrílica para resistir el fuerte sol caribeño y las lluvias. ¡25 años después, el mural parece recién hecho!
Otro detalle sorprendente es que con solo 4 colores (marrón, rosa coral, negro y beige claro) logró 13 tonalidades, las cuales parecen reproducir una fotografía en sepia.
Me gusta mucho detenerme a observar esta obra, ahí vemos como si fuera una escena de paseo al frente del Palacio, mujeres con trajes de volantes, hombres de levita, algunos asomados a los balcones... ¡me concentro en el mural y hasta me parece escuchar el crujir de los carruajes sobre la calle!
Este mural no es solo un homenaje a ilustres del pasado; es un diálogo entre las personas más importantes de épocas pasadas, tenerlas todas reunidas nos permite recordar los valiosos legados que cada una nos dejó.
Esta calle sigue siendo muy concurrida y este mural es una parada obligatoria para todos porque se respira arte con una escena llena de vida de la época colonial.
