I start by saying that I am Cuban, as many already know, but I say it on this occasion because in Cuba, Halloween is not usually celebrated. This tradition only in recent years has started to be put into practice in my native country. The truth is, previously it wasn’t celebrated due to a lack of necessary resources and because it’s a celebration from foreign countries and not born in Cuba.
Empiezo diciendo que yo soy cubana, como muchos ya saben, pero lo digo en esta ocasión ya que en Cuba no suele celebrarse Halloween. Esta tradición solo hace algunos años es que se ha empezado a poner en práctica en mi país natal. La verdad, anteriormente no se festejaba por cuestiones de falta de recursos necesarios y porque es una celebración de países extranjeros y no nacida en Cuba.
Just a few years ago it has been developing and therefore people have started to dress up, from children to adults. I remember the first Halloween party that took place in my old town, Punta Brava, which was held right in some houses before my grandparents’. That house where it was celebrated was huge, with a good garden and terrace perfect for the occasion, since literally, the whole town attended. Imagine, it was the first time.
Hace poquitos años que se ha venido desarrollando y por lo tanto es que se han comenzado a disfrazar las personas, desde los niños hasta los adultos. Recuerdo la primera fiesta de Halloween que se llevó a cabo en mi antiguo pueblo, Punta Brava, la cual se hizo justo en unas casas antes de la de mis abuelos. Esa casa donde se festejó era enorme, con buen jardín y terraza perfecta para la ocasión, ya que literalmente, asistió el pueblo entero. Imagínense, era la primera vez.
I dressed up as a cat: I dressed all in black with tight clothes and with some long black scarves I made up a tail. On my face I painted the typical cat whiskers and its characteristic snout. My friend Daniela Sánchez dressed as a Hawaiian with an original costume, with coconuts with flowers as a bra and a skirt of threads, and Daniela Echazabal as a little devil, all in intense red, with the characteristic horns on her head and a red and black trident. Something similar to the items I’m carrying in the photo.
Yo me disfracé de gata: me vestí toda de negro con ropa ajustada y con unas bufandas largas y negras me inventé una cola. En la cara me pinté los típicos bigotes de gato y su hocico característico. Mi amiga Daniela Sánchez se vistió de hawaiana con un traje original, con cocos con flores como sujetador y falda de hilos, y Daniela Echazabal de diablita, toda de rojo intenso, con los característicos cuernos en la cabeza y un tridente rojo y negro. Algo parecido a los artículos que llevo en la foto.
That night was very fun between dances and laughs, and the prize for the best costume was won by Daniela E.’s cousin with a huge bride dress and outfits simulating the corpse bride. There was another occasion when I put on a green glittery dress and a short light blue hair wig, and everyone called me the very well-known Juana Bacallao, a Cuban singer known in many parts of the world.
Esa noche fue muy divertida entre bailes y risas, y el premio al mejor disfraz lo ganó el primo de Daniela E. con un vestidazo de novia y conjuntos simulando a la novia cadáver. Hubo otra ocasión que me puse un vestido verde de brillos y una peluca de cabello corto azul claro, y todos me nombraron como la muy conocida Juana Bacallao, una cantante cubana conocida en muchas partes del mundo.
Today I relive all these memories because, as every Monday, we go to Bodega Aurrera to buy our food for the week and, walking through the aisles, we found the section dedicated to articles and costumes for the upcoming Halloween. October is already approaching and the decorations and sales for the celebration begin. For us it’s very nice to see the costumes, haunted pumpkins, candles of all types and colors, and outfits and accessories of the very famous Catrinas, especially well-known here in Mexico.
Hoy revivo todos estos recuerdos ya que, como cada lunes, vamos a Bodega Aurrera a comprar nuestra comida de la semana y, caminando por los pasillos, encontramos la sección dedicada a los artículos y disfraces para el próximo Halloween. Ya se acerca octubre y comienzan las decoraciones y ventas para el festejo. Para nosotros es muy lindo ver los disfraces, calabazas embrujadas, velas de todos tipos y colores, y trajes y accesorios de las muy famosas Catrinas, muy conocidas en especial aquí en México.
We didn’t miss the opportunity and we took some photos trying on the costumes; we’re already calculating what we’ll dress up as this year, which is our first year living in Mexico.
No perdimos la oportunidad y nos sacamos algunas fotos probándonos los disfraces; ya vamos calculando de qué nos disfrazaremos este año, que es nuestro primer año viviendo en México.
We’ve also heard that right after Halloween, Mexicans celebrate the Day of the Dead, both the little ones in reference to deceased children and the big dead in allusion to adults and elders. That’s another custom that is not practiced in my country. We don’t have a specific day to visit our deceased relatives and share with them. A neighbor told me that on that day they light several candles on the grave, bring beers and rum, also food, and it’s like they share everything with the dead as if it were a dinner.
También hemos escuchado que justo después de Halloween los mexicanos celebran el Día de los Muertos, tanto los pequeños en referencia a los niños fallecidos y los muertos grandes en alusión a los adultos y ancianos. Esa es otra costumbre que no se practica en mi país. No tenemos un día en específico para visitar a nuestros familiares fallecidos y compartir con ellos. Un vecino me contaba que ese día ellos encienden varias velas en la tumba, llevan cervezas y ron, también comidas, y es como que lo comparten todo con el muerto como si fuera una cena.
Investigating a bit I discovered that Halloween derives from “All Hallows’ Eve” (Eve of All Saints) and that it has an origin in a Celtic festival called Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the Celtic year. During Samhain, it was believed that the spirits of the dead could cross into the world of the living, so people lit bonfires and dressed up to scare away evil spirits. This last part I do know a bit thanks to the famous movie Coco, which precisely deals with these festivities and how the dead cross into the world of the living to see their loved ones again and share together.
Investigando un poco descubrí que Halloween se deriva de “All Hallows’ Eve” (Víspera de Todos los Santos) y que tiene un origen en una festividad celta llamada Samhain, el cual marcaba el fin de la temporada de cosechas y el año celta. Durante Samhain, se creía que los espíritus de los muertos podían cruzar al mundo de los vivos, por lo que la gente encendía hogueras y se disfrazaba para espantar a los espíritus malignos. Esta última parte sí la conozco un poco gracias a la famosa película Coco, que precisamente trata de estas festividades y cómo los muertos cruzan al mundo de los vivos para volver a ver a sus seres queridos y compartir juntos.
I also correctly informed myself that this tradition comes from Ireland and Scotland, I erroneously believed it was American.
También me informé correctamente que esta tradición viene de Irlanda y Escocia, yo erróneamente, creía que era estadounidense.
Friends, it’s very beautiful to see the beginnings of the decorations, the closer the day gets, I know I’ll see bigger decorations in the houses and all kinds of places. We’ll see what my boyfriend and I will dress up as, maybe we’ll opt for a matching set or each one a different character. Too bad we no longer have the age to collect candies from house to house, hahaha.
Amigos, es muy bello ver los inicios de las decoraciones, mientras más se acerque el día, sé que veré mayores decoraciones en las casas y todo tipo de lugares. Ya veremos de qué nos disfrazaremos mi novio y yo, quizás optemos por un conjunto a juego o cada cual un personaje distinto. Lástima ya no tengamos la edad para recoger dulces de casa en casa, jajaja.
