DEALING WITH PEER PRESSURE

When I first started school, I had a clear idea of what I wanted to achieve. I was focused on my goals and determined to make the most of my time there. But I struggled to fit in, especially with the way some people dressed and lived. I felt a bit down, wondering if I was the only one who was serious about getting an education.

I remember my first year in the hostel, sharing a room with three other girls. Two of them were in their second year, and they had a lifestyle that was quite different from mine. They don't cook, they would eat out or order food, and they would sleep during the day when they are expected to attend lectures, and go out at night. I could not afford that kind of lifestyle, and I also noticed they did not attend classes or read books. They would tell me to stop reading and sleep when I am reading, saying they did not promise their parents distinction, just a certificate.

At first, I tried to ignore them and focus on my studies, but it was hard. They would always complain when I was reading in the room, and it started to get to me. I realized they were a bad influence, and I started avoiding them. I would leave the room to read in class or go home on weekends. Eventually, the other girl joined them, and I was left alone. It was like they were trying to pull me down with them, but I was not having it.

I started spending more time with positive people who encouraged me to do well. I met a girl in my class who was really driven and ambitious, and we started studying together. She became a big support to me, and I started to thrive. In the second semester, I had to leave the room and got another place to stay.

Looking back, I realize that I made the right decision to distance myself from those negative influences. It was not easy, but it was worth it. Sometimes, you just need to take a step back and evaluate who is around you. If they are not supporting your goals, it is okay to move on. You are who you are around, so choose your circle wisely.
