Unlucky Like Chocolate

Unlucky Like Chocolate perfectly encapsulates the essence of the Undersound collective. We imagined the life of cacao: it could have peacefully swayed on its tree, kissed by the sun, scattering its seeds to bring new life—an existence almost poetic, nearly zen.

But no. THE HARVESTER ARRIVES. The cacao is torn away with the grace of a bull in a china shop, bundled up with its fellow unfortunates, and shipped off to who knows where. Freezing containers, endless transoceanic voyages—a globetrotting life never asked for.

And then? It lands in a laboratory, surrounded by people in white coats who dissect it, taste it like seasoned sommeliers, and analyze it as if it holds the secrets of the universe. After this CSI-style examination, it’s repackaged and shipped off once again, because, apparently, its world tour isn’t over.

Finally, it ends up in the hands of wild children, who jab their fingers into it, sucking and smearing chocolate everywhere—no respect whatsoever. If it's lucky, it might find itself in a cake. If not, it'll be forgotten in a Nutella jar, left to rot in solitude.

Yet, cacao isn’t the only one with such a fate. If life, despite your best efforts, makes you a cacao bean and then turns you into chocolate, one morning you may find yourself in the hands of a minister—already spread onto a sandwich. And then tell me, what will you do?

If life won’t help you, if you refuse to move, do you stay put, frozen, rotting in a forgotten jar, or do you let yourself melt into a cake for a grand feast?

In the great marketplace of life, we are all at the mercy of those who package, select, sell, and consume us. And while the video brings to life a charade of chocolate in all its forms, the soundtrack—crafted with AI—guides us through this hypnotic journey. Pure desert blues guitars, Tinariwen-style bass, an opening bathed in vocoder magic, leading into an explosion of desert rock where harmonica, guitar, and bass weave a mesmerizing dance.

And maybe—perhaps because many of us are synesthetic—this tragicomedy feels eerily familiar. Looking at the world around us, we’re all a little bit unlucky like chocolate
