Many of us have a love-hate relationship with the place where we live. It's normal for some things to irritate us deeply while others make us proud. Everything has its good and bad sides, even highly developed countries. There is still no such thing as a perfect place. And today, I'm going to talk about my beloved Brazil: sometimes I love it, sometimes I hate it.
Let's start with something that many people know, unfortunately, in a negative way: violence. Yes, this is a country known for that, and depending on how often you watch the news, you may think we live in a wild place, and in certain regions, that is true. Violence is very common, especially in large cities, particularly in the suburbs. Recently, one of the largest police operations in Rio de Janeiro took place to combat drug trafficking, and the case made headlines across the country, perhaps even worldwide, due to the number of deaths. It was a real war.
But I can't say that this accurately reflects what Brazil is like. Today I live in a large city with over 500,000 inhabitants, and I have never been mugged. I have never seen anyone being mugged, and cases of violence here are relatively rare; we usually only hear about them in the newspapers. Some regions of the country are dangerous, yes, but I believe that happens anywhere in the world. Here, I live in peaceful tranquility and without fear, even though I am in a fairly large urban center. Of course, I cannot say the same for all states, but I can speak from my own experience. And if someone says that Brazil is a violent country, I would say: it depends on the place.
Well, there are also many good things here. It is well known that Brazilian people are hospitable and kind-hearted. Most Brazilians are cheerful, hard-working, and fight hard to achieve their dreams, even in the face of difficulties caused by poor administration and corrupt politicians. But if there's one thing I can say for sure, it's that if you come here, you'll be welcomed with open arms. And Brazil isn't just known for that around the world, but also for soccer. How could I not mention that?
Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, and my country is the best at it! Yes, we haven't been doing well for some time, the “crop” of great players is not the best, and we have faced difficulties. But even though we are going through a bad patch, Brazil is still respected wherever it plays and always arrives at the World Cup as one of the favorites to win the title. Who has never heard of Pelé, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, or Roberto Carlos? Only if you're under 30, and even then, I'd venture to say that you must have heard of these soccer geniuses at some point. And, of course, I'll leave you with some very important information: when someone asks you which is the biggest club in Brazil, say it's Vasco da Gama.
But, well, Brazil has its downsides, and violence is one of them. Even so, despite so many difficulties, we are a happy and hard-working people. And a Brazilian who doesn't like soccer... well, maybe they're not a real Brazilian. I love my country and believe it has great potential to become a more peaceful and prosperous place. Who knows, maybe one day Brazil will not only be the country of soccer, but the country of prosperous people. Maybe one day.

Muitos de nós temos uma relação de amor e ódio com o lugar onde vivemos. É normal que algumas coisas nos irritem profundamente enquanto outras nos deixem orgulhosos. Tudo tem seu lado bom e ruim, mesmo países superdesenvolvidos. Ainda não existe um lugar perfeito. E, hoje, vou falar do meu querido Brasil: às vezes amo, às vezes odeio.
Vamos começar por algo que muitos conhecem, infelizmente, de forma negativa: a violência. Sim, aqui é um país conhecido por isso e, dependendo da frequência com que você assiste aos noticiários, pode achar que vivemos em um lugar selvagem e, em certas regiões, isso é verdade. A violência é muito comum, especialmente nas grandes cidades, principalmente nas áreas periféricas. Recentemente, ocorreu uma das maiores operações policiais no Rio de Janeiro para combater o tráfico, e o caso virou manchete no país inteiro, talvez até no mundo, pela quantidade de mortos. Foi uma verdadeira guerra.
Mas não posso dizer que isso reflete exatamente o que o Brasil é. Hoje moro em uma cidade grande, com mais de 500 mil habitantes, e nunca fui assaltado. Nunca vi alguém ser assaltado, e os casos de violência aqui são relativamente raros, geralmente, a gente só fica sabendo pelos jornais. Algumas regiões do país são perigosas, sim, mas acredito que isso acontece em qualquer lugar do mundo. Aqui, vivo em tranquila paz e sem medo, mesmo estando em um centro urbano considerável. Claro, não posso dizer o mesmo de todos os estados, mas posso falar da minha realidade. E, se alguém disser que o Brasil é um país violento, eu diria: depende do lugar.
Bem, também existem muitas coisas boas por aqui. É sabido que o povo brasileiro é hospitaleiro e de bom coração. A maioria dos brasileiros é alegre, trabalhadora e luta muito para conquistar seus sonhos, mesmo enfrentando dificuldades causadas por uma má administração e por governantes corruptos. Mas, se tem algo que posso afirmar, é que se você vier para cá, será bem recebido. E o Brasil não é conhecido apenas por isso mundialmente, mas também pelo futebol, como eu poderia deixar de mencionar isso?
O futebol é o esporte mais popular do mundo, e o meu país é o melhor entre todos! Sim, não vivemos uma boa fase há algum tempo, a “safra” de grandes jogadores não é das melhores e temos enfrentado dificuldades. Mas, mesmo passando por um momento ruim, o Brasil ainda é respeitado em qualquer lugar onde joga e sempre chega a uma Copa do Mundo como um dos candidatos ao título. Quem nunca ouviu falar de Pelé, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho ou Roberto Carlos? Só se você tiver menos de 30 anos e, ainda assim, arrisco dizer que já deve ter ouvido falar desses gênios do futebol alguma vez. E, claro, vou deixar aqui uma informação muito importante: quando alguém lhe perguntar qual é o maior clube do Brasil, diga que é o Vasco da Gama.
Mas, bem, o Brasil tem seus pontos negativos, e a violência é um deles. Ainda assim, mesmo diante de tantas dificuldades, somos um povo feliz e trabalhador. E um brasileiro que não gosta de futebol... bem, talvez não seja um brasileiro de verdade. Gosto do meu país e acredito que ele tem um grande potencial para se tornar um lugar mais pacífico e próspero. Quem sabe, um dia, o Brasil não seja apenas o país do futebol, mas o país das pessoas prósperas. Quem sabe um dia.
