"Agradeciendo a la vida". Hace dos años y medio, mi papá fue operado de emergencia por una peritonitis. Durante la cirugía, surgieron complicaciones relacionadas con la tensión, y su recuperación estuvo llena de momentos difíciles. Lo que vivimos fue un proceso duro; sentía que mi alma se rompía en pedazos, ya que mi padre es mi mayor tesoro, a quién amo con toda mi alma y por quién daría lo que fuera. >"Grateful for life." Two and a half years ago, my dad underwent emergency surgery for peritonitis. During the surgery, complications arose related to stress, and his recovery was fraught with difficult moments. What we went through was a tough process; I felt like my soul was breaking into pieces, since my father is my greatest treasure, whom I love with all my heart and for whom I would give anything. En un movimiento brusco, percibió que algo se reventó por dentro. De inmediato, lo llevamos al hospital, donde nos aseguraron que todo estaba excelente. Sin embargo, notábamos que su abdomen estaba muy inflamado. Contacté a una cirujana amiga de la familia, quien me recomendó llevarlo a un chequeo. Así lo hicimos, al hacerle su chequeo médico la amiga nos mencionó que lo más probable era que se tratara de una eventración, pero para estar seguros debíamos esperar un año para un diagnóstico definitivo. >After the surgery, when my dad was already at home, he felt the need to go to the bathroom. In a sudden movement, he felt something burst inside. We immediately took him to the hospital, where they assured us that everything was fine. However, we noticed that his abdomen was very swollen. I contacted a surgeon who was a friend of the family, who recommended that we take him for a checkup. We did so, and during the medical examination, our friend mentioned that it was most likely a hernia, but to be sure, we would have to wait a year for a definitive diagnosis.  Esto nos preocupó mucho, ya que al mencionar la eventración, sabíamos que debía someterse nuevamente a cirugía. Con el tiempo, se confirmó que efectivamente era una eventración; el abdomen de mi papá seguía creciendo. Comenzamos a realizar consultas en el hospital, y de inmediato se le solicitaron los exámenes correspondientes. Él se los realizó y volvió a control, donde el doctor nos informó que debía ser operado antes de que la eventración avanzara más. >This worried us greatly, as we knew that hernia meant he would have to undergo surgery again. Over time, it was confirmed that it was indeed a hernia; my dad's abdomen continued to grow. We began consultations at the hospital, and the necessary tests were immediately requested. He had them done and returned for a follow-up, where the doctor informed us that he would need surgery before the hernia progressed further.  Hicimos todo lo que estuvo en nuestras manos, pero este proceso se extendió por dos años y medio, ya que conseguir un cupo para una cirugía en el hospital es complicado. Lamentablemente, la situación de salud en Venezuela es crítica; no hay suministros médicos suficientes y quienes no cuentan con recursos deben recurrir a la ayuda de otros a través de las redes. A pesar de todo, agradezco a la vida porque mi papá es un guerrero desde que tengo memoria. Él ahorró mucho y se preparó para esta cirugía, y gracias a que mi hermana comenzó a trabajar en el hospital, logró conseguir el cupo para él. Lamentablemente hay que tener padrinos en estos sitios para poder ser atendidos. >We did everything in our power, but this process took two and a half years, as getting a spot for surgery at the hospital is complicated. Unfortunately, the health situation in Venezuela is critical; there are not enough medical supplies, and those who do not have resources must resort to asking others for help through social media. Despite everything, I am grateful for life because my dad has been a warrior for as long as I can remember. He saved a lot and prepared for this surgery, and thanks to my sister starting to work at the hospital, he managed to get a spot for him. Unfortunately, you have to have sponsors in these places to be able to get treatment.  Llegó el día. Me fui a las seis de la mañana con mi papá al hospital, y mi hermana llegó a las seis y cuarenta. Mi papá entró a quirófano a las 11 de la mañana para su preparación, sin embargo entro a quirófano a las doce y cuarenta y cinco minutos. Nos inquietamos porque esta cirugía solo duraba 45 minutos. Mi mamá se puso nerviosa, así que para calmarla le dije: "Recuerda que los preparan y eso lleva tiempo". Pasaron las dos horas y salió el especialista. Mi hermana, como lo conocía, salió corriendo a preguntarle. Él nos confirmó que mi papá se complicó en quirófano con la tensión y que la masa de la eventración era muy grande. Nos dijo que estaba en recuperación, esperando a que despertara. >The day arrived. I left at six in the morning with my dad to go to the hospital, and my sister arrived at six forty. My dad went into the operating room at 11 a.m. to get ready, but he didn't actually go into surgery until twelve forty-five. We were worried because this surgery was only supposed to take 45 minutes. My mom got nervous, so to calm her down, I said, "Remember that they prepare them, and that takes time." Two hours passed, and the specialist came out. My sister, who knew him, ran out to ask him. He confirmed that my dad had complications in the operating room due to stress and that the hernia was very large. He told us that he was in recovery, waiting to wake up.  Mi hermana, ya que podía pasar por trabar allí, vio a mi papá en mal estado; cuando trataba de hablar, solo se le sentía el balbuceo y salía de su boca mucha saliva. Sus ojos estaban en blanco y su piel lucía pálida. De inmediato, llamó a la doctora y le preguntó por qué estaba así, ya que no parecía bien. La doctora le comentó que se había complicado y que al levantarse sentía mucho dolor, por lo que le habían administrado tramal. Pasada media hora, yo entré y lo vi mal, con oxígeno. Realmente sentí que me moría y mi corazón se aceleró. Inmediatamente, mi mamá y yo regresamos a casa para ducharme y recoger cosas para quedarnos con él. Fue una noche muy incómoda, pero hoy mi papá está bastante bien. >My sister, who happened to be passing by, saw that my dad was in bad shape; when he tried to speak, he could only babble, and a lot of saliva came out of his mouth. His eyes were rolled back, and his skin looked pale. She immediately called the doctor and asked why he was like that, since he didn't seem well. The doctor told her that his condition had worsened and that he was in a lot of pain when he got up, so they had given him tramal. Half an hour later, I went in and saw him looking bad, on oxygen. I really felt like I was dying, and my heart raced. My mom and I immediately went back home to shower and pack some things so we could stay with him. It was a very uncomfortable night, but today my dad is doing quite well.  Mi papá y mi hermano viven en un pueblo llamado Merito, mientras que mi hermana y yo estamos en la ciudad. Esto ha hecho que, como familia, no nos veamos con frecuencia, solo en temporadas. Sin embargo, mi papá viene más seguido a visitarnos. Aunque este momento fue muy incómodo y aterrador, logró reunir a toda la familia a su lado, disfrutando de un buen sancocho de pescado y muchos sorbos de café. Ya extrañaba el calor del hogar, ese que no se compara con nada. Mi mamá vive conmigo desde que le diagnosticaron cáncer de piel. Ahora tengo a mis padres en casa, ya que mi papá debe cuidarse durante un año sin hacer esfuerzos, puesto que quedó muy delicado. Estoy agradecida a la vida y a Dios porque está mejorando satisfactoriamente y si no hubiera sucedido esto, no tendríamos la oportunidad de disfrutar juntos como familia. This means that, as a family, we don't see each other often, only during certain times of the year. However, my dad comes to visit us more often. Although this moment was very uncomfortable and scary, he managed to gather the whole family around him, enjoying a delicious fish stew and lots of coffee. I already missed the warmth of home, which is incomparable to anything else. >My mom has been living with me since she was diagnosed with skin cancer. Now I have both my parents at home, since my dad has to take care of himself for a year without exerting himself, as he is still very fragile. I am grateful to life and to God because he is improving satisfactorily, and if this had not happened, we would not have the opportunity to enjoy ourselves together as a family.
