The other day, we went to Las Letras, a super accessible and intriguing hill in Mérida that's worth visiting. It’s interesting because at first, the vegetation is quite dense, like a humid forest, but suddenly, you emerge into the light and find yourself on a soft-soiled hill that’s incredibly fun to climb.
El otro día fuimos a las Letras, que resulta un cerro merideño súper accesible y curioso para visitar. Es curioso porque al principio la vegetación es bastante densa, como de bosque húmedo, pero de repente sales a la luz y te topas con un cerro de tierra suave que es super divertido de subir.
We agreed to meet at the famous La Vuelta de Lola, the iconic entry (or exit) point of the city, and walked about six minutes to the entrance of the hill, which is located on the way to Valle de la Culata.
Acordamos encontrarnos en la famosa La Vuelta de Lola, que es el punto icónico de entrada (o salida) de la ciudad, y caminamos unos 6 minutos hasta la entrada al cerro, que queda vía hacia el Valle de la Culata.
Around the entrance, there are a few houses, so we started walking past them before entering the forest. The surroundings are quite peaceful, making it easy to get lost in the details nature has to offer.
Alrededor de la entrada del cerro hay algunas casas, así que empezamos a caminar por allí hasta adentrarnos al bosque. El ambiente es bastante silencioso alrededor, por lo cual se hace muy sencillo perderse entre los detalles que tiene para ofrecerte la naturaleza.
Once inside the forest, you have to be careful because the trail is not well-marked, so it’s best to go with someone who knows the way. Additionally, there is a trail exclusively for cyclists, so you need to be careful not to take that path.
Una vez dentro del bosque, hay que tener cuidado porque la ruta no está muy bien delimitada, por lo cual es recomendable ir con alguien que la conozca. Además, en este cerro hay una ruta solo para ciclistas, por lo cual hay que tener cuidado de tomar este camino.
At one point in the forest, you come across a small passage where the sunlight reflects more, and that's precisely where you need to walk, as it’s the exit toward the hill itself.
En un punto del bosque, te topas con un pequeño pasadizo donde el sol refleja más, y es justo allí por donde debes caminar ya que es la salida hacia el cerro en sí.
From this point on, the soil becomes more clay-like, and you can see the pine trees, which are my favorite part of this place. Furthermore, the views of the Sierra Nevada and the rest of the city from here are breathtaking.
Desde este punto, la tierra cambia hacia un color más arcilloso y puedes ver los pinos que son mi parte favorita de este cerro. Además, las vistas hacia la Sierra Nevada y el resto de la ciudad desde aquí, son impresionantes.
There's a spot on the hill where you literally have to climb using your hands and feet to get to the top. Large mounds of soil and rocks make it impossible to ascend by simply walking, which makes it extra fun.
Llega un punto del cerro donde debes literalmente escalar con tus pies y manos para poder subir, ya que te topas con grandes montículos de tierra y piedra que son imposibles de subir caminando normalmente, lo cual se hace súper divertido.
Little by little, we reached the pine trees with large branches that you can also climb to get an even better view of the city—of course, being very careful.
Así, poco a poco, llegamos a los pinos de grandes ramas que fácilmente también puedes escalar y tener mejor vista de toda la ciudad, sin embargo, obviamente todo con mucho cuidado.
Continuing, we finally reached the summit, which is marked by a large antenna. From this point, you can keep walking to a small clearing where there are even exercise bars and a peculiar green bench where you can sit and take a photo with a stunning view of the city of Mérida in the background.
Así sucesivamente, llegamos al punto final, que sabes has llegado a la cima del cerro cuando te topas con una gran antena. Desde este punto, puedes seguir caminando hasta un pequeño claro donde incluso hay barras para hacer ejercicio y un curioso banquito verde donde puedes sentarte y tomarte una foto una vista preciosa de toda la ciudad de Mérida de fondo.
On the other side, you can enjoy a view of part of Valle de la Culata, and even see one of its peaks called Pan de Azúcar. The rocks at its summit are gray and white, giving it that "sugar-dusted" appearance. Here, we sat down for a while to talk, eat, and enjoy the scenery.
Hacia el otro lado, puedes tener una vista de una parte del Valle de la Culata, e incluso ver uno de sus picos llamado Pan de Azúcar, ya que las rocas de su cúspide son gris-blancas, lo que le da ese aspecto de "azúcar" encima. Aquí, nos sentamos un rato para hablar, comer y disfrutar del espacio.
Now, going downhill is another adventure. Since the ascent required climbing with our hands, the descent calls for the famous "culicross" technique to avoid slipping too much. This basically consists of crouching down and sliding down the dirt to maintain balance.
Ahora bien, la bajada también es otra aventura, ya que como la subida desde escalarla con las manos, en la bajada debes emplear el famoso "culicross" para no resbalar y caer tanto, que consiste en básicamente agacharte y bajar deslizándote por la tierra de esta forma, y así no perder el equilibrio.
So, we descended little by little, and along the way, it started drizzling slightly, which made everything even more exciting. Back inside the forest, we found some vines or long branches hanging from tall trees. We tested their strength to see if they could hold us up, and once we confirmed they were sturdy enough, we swung on them for a bit—something you don’t get to do every day.
Así, bajamos poco a poco, y en el camino comenzó a lloviznar un poco, lo cual hacía todo más emocionante. Dentro del bosque nuevamente, nos topamos con unas lianas o ramas largas que caían desde grandes árboles, probamos si eran lo suficientemente resistentes como para columpiarnos un poco, y eso hicimos. No se tiene esa oportunidad todos los días.
Once we left the hill, we thanked it for allowing us such a beautiful moment and ended the day with some ice cream. We did the entire hike (up and down) at a relaxed pace, stopping frequently and spending time at the top, which took us about five hours. However, if you're going strictly for exercise, you can easily hike up and down Las Letras in about an hour and a half at a good pace.
Una vez salimos del cerro, agradecimos a este por permitirnos un momento tan lindo, y terminamos el día con unos heladitos. Hicimos todo el recorrido (subida y bajada) tipo paseo, deteniéndonos y contando el tiempo que estuvimos arriba en la cima relajándonos, como en unas 5 horas. Sin embargo, si vas solo por el hecho de hacer deporte, puedes fácilmente subir y bajar el cerro Las Letras en una hora y media, a buen ritmo.
A curious fact: this hill is called Las Letras ("The Letters") because, in the past, people used to arrange white-painted rocks on its summit to form phrases visible from the entire city. They wrote advertising messages as well as Christian faith-related phrases. It really is a wonderful place if you want to have a great time with friends, surrounded by nature, and with spectacular views.
Una curiosidad, es que este cerro se llama así ("Las Letras") porque en su cima escribían antes frases formadas con rocas pintadas de blanco, que se veían desde toda la ciudad. Escribían frases publicitarias y también relacionadas a la fe cristiana. Realmente, este es un muy buen lugar si quieres pasar un rato lindo con amigos, en un espacio verde hermoso y con vistas espectaculares.
