Like every year, we spend part of the summer in our old home. There is a large garden there, a kingdom of greenery, fruits and vegetables. Oh, and of course mosquitoes. But, as we already know, nothing comes without sacrifice, so if you want to pick some fruit to eat, there is a chance that a mosquito will also get fed.
Luckily, the lush vegetation is not only visited by mosquitoes. There are more useful insects that are very important in the process of pollination. Flies, bumblebees or honey bees frequently come to the flowers, as we can also notice here, in the yellow flower of the pumpkin.
Although I couldn't tell you the difference in the type of pumpkins just by their leaves or flowers, the little pumpkins that grow at several spots in the garden are different. This one is still a baby, but I liked it very much because of its patterns.
These pumpkin plants live among grass, so they have a layer of huge leaves on top of them and a green blanket on the ground. It was not planned in this way, but the pumpkin plants grew long, occupying like real conquerors the part of the garden even where the roses grow.
The tomatoes are behaving well. Their stems are tied to stakes, which means they grow upward. Regardless of the type, as there are several types of tomatoes here, they need to be watered regularly, and what is a novelty this year is that my parents-in-law, who are coming here to the garden to grow these vegetables, placed a net over the tomato plants.
They did this to protect the tomatoes from hail and excessive sun. Perhaps the only thing they can't protect the tomatoes from is some bugs, especially the brown marmorated stink bug that appeared in large numbers in this area some years ago. It seems these bugs also prefer the homegrown fruits and vegetables.
For the first time, beetroot is growing in the garden. You can consume the root of the beetroot fresh in salads, or make a healthy juice from it. Also, it can be cooked, but the most common way to consume the beetroot here is as pickled.
This year, the plum trees are giving their fruit very generously. As you see, the branches bend from the weight of the plums, which means a lot of plum jam, and of course, traditional brandy will be prepared from these fruits in the fall.
The brandy is too strong for me... I prefer to pick one or two fresh plums and enjoy their taste while they are fresh. :)
