Vinyl records - an item interesting just for collectors?

Unfortunately, the golden era of vinyl records is a thing that not many of us can remember from our own experience. At least, I can't. I do recall having a pile of vinyl at my parents' home, but we have never listened to them due to the turntable being broken. Also, at that time in my childhood, we already had cassette tapes as the main medium for music, so the collection of vinyl records from my family was already gathering dust on some of the shelves. That was a sad destiny for these flat discs containing all this beautiful music.

It changed when my son, for a reason known just to him, bought a gramophone a few years ago. It was funny as he went to Barcelona for a week with one backpack and came back with an additional suitcase and a heavy box. I waited for him at the train station, and when I saw him, I was a bit confused - what is all this stuff now?

I bought a turntable and some vinyl records, among other things. Mom, look...

Okaaaay... let's admit that it is not so bad that someone is interested in buying used books, vinyl records or turntables. 🤷‍♀

That same summer when we visited my parents, we took a few classical music records from their collection and added to the ones my son bought in Barcelona. That is how this collection was born:

You can notice one common thing among these vinyl records... it is all classical music. Of course, it is not just a coincidence. That is the genre of music he is studying, and although you can find ~~literally~~ almost everything on YouTube or Spotify nowadays, he felt that curiosity to listen to these pieces from this peculiar medium. It is quite a different feeling, that is true.

This collection contains pretty famous composers, pieces and performers. If we listened now to this music instead of reading this post, we could hear Mozart's Requiem, Schubert's Unfinished Symphony, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, or the Symphony No. 3 by Johannes Brahms, among others. We could also hear my favourite Piano Concerto (No. 3 by Rachmaninoff), Bach, Berlioz or Mendelssohn's music, as well as The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns; here is also the vinyl posing in my hand.

There are also many Russian composers, like Modest Mussorgsky, with Pictures at an Exhibition, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov with Scheherezade and Russian Easter Festival Overture, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, with various masterpieces (Piano Concerto No. 1, Swan Lake, Ouverture 1812 and String Quartet No. 1 in D major).

That is a lot of great symphonic music... although we can also find pieces for piano solo. You can guess that this is my favourite section of this collection. 😉 This is all Chopin, and especially interesting one is the recording with Maurizio Pollini. He was a great pianist, famous for his interpretations of Chopin and Beethoven.

Ivo Pogorelich is a well-known Yugoslavian pianist, whose interpretations and style brought him recognition but also criticism when he was young. His career was largely marked by his private life. (He stopped performing for some time after his teacher/colleague/wife died, but later became active again.)

As the last item in today's collection, I present to you this record by the composer Johann Strauss Jr. It is interesting because it has a booklet in its cover, which brings the biography of this composer accompanied by important dates, compositions and images.

November is here, and so is the monthly theme in the Hive Collectors community:

Vinyl Records

I must apologise for skipping two months (actually, being late two months, as I planned this theme for September already). However, here we are with this new topic now; better late than never. 😇

Do you have vinyl records? Do you think they can gain popularity again? Maybe vinyl records are interesting just for collectors...? I would be glad to read your opinion and see your collection during this month!
