16 04 2 0 2 5 Late Spring in Krasnaya Polyana: Snow, Sea, and Sunlight

"Any trip is a holiday that will forever remain in your memory" — someone

There are few places in the world where you can ski in deep powder and stroll by the sea in the same weekend, but Krasnaya Polyana is one of them. Nestled in the Western Caucasus and just a short drive from the Black Sea coast, this mountain resort in south continues to surprise even the most seasoned travelers — and this late spring visit proved just that.

Our journey began with a short domestic flight, a smooth hop over the mountains on a small regional airline. It felt effortless. Within an hour, we had left the urban bustle behind and were descending toward a landscape still blanketed in snow. As we landed and stepped onto the tarmac, the mountain peaks shimmered under a clear blue sky. The air was crisp but carried a touch of warmth — the first sign that spring was quietly creeping in.

What caught everyone by surprise this season was the record snowfall. For a region known for its subtropical climate, the numbers were incredible — over 1.5 meters of snow still on the ground in late April. Locals couldn’t remember the last time the slopes had held up so well this deep into the season. Skiers were grinning ear to ear, and so were we.

The groomed ski runs were in top shape, with wide, well-maintained pistes stretching down the mountain like silver ribbons. We spent the first day exploring as much terrain as possible — carving down the slopes, soaking in the sun, and barely stopping for breaks. The sunshine was constant, the visibility perfect. It was hard to believe it was spring.

But the real magic came over the next two days of freeriding. We hired a guide who knew every corner of the backcountry. He led us through untouched bowls, tree runs where snow glistened like crystals, and steep chutes that got the adrenaline flowing. The snow was soft and deep, but still dry enough to hold shape. We floated through it like dreamers, leaving tracks in silence, our breath visible in the cold morning air.

Each evening, exhausted but happy, we sat on the terrace of our lodge watching the sun set over the peaks. The light turned gold, then rose, and finally disappeared behind the ridge, leaving only the sound of melting snow and distant laughter. It felt like the best kind of escape — both exhilarating and calming.

On our final day, we decided to take a break from the mountains and drive down to the coast. It’s one of the many gifts of Krasnaya Polyana — in under an hour, you can swap skis for sneakers and find yourself by the Black Sea. The shift in scenery was surreal. Gone were the towering snow-covered peaks; in their place were palm trees, blooming flowers, and the soft rush of waves.

We wandered through a seaside park, where the paths wound past flowering shrubs and ancient trees. Beautiful birds flitted through the branches, and near a calm pond we spotted a pair of graceful swans, their white feathers catching the afternoon light. It was peaceful in a completely different way than the mountains had been — still and slow, with a sense of timelessness.

At the heart of the park stood a historic seaside villa, clearly inspired by French architecture. Cream-colored stone, arched windows, and carved details gave it a romantic, old-world charm. Sculptures lined the walkway — mythological figures, half-hidden in ivy, standing watch over the gardens. We sat on a nearby bench, watching the light shift across the façade, and let the calmness wash over us.

That evening, back in town, we dined at a small family-run restaurant. Over fresh seafood and a bottle of local white wine, we tried to put into words what this weekend had meant. It wasn’t just a ski trip. It was something more layered — a contrast of snow and sea, speed and stillness, wildness and elegance.

Krasnaya Polyana in late spring is a rare experience. You get the thrill of high-mountain powder with the beauty and warmth of the subtropics, all in a single place. It’s the kind of destination that reminds you how vast and varied the world is — and how sometimes, the best adventures are the ones where you don’t have to choose between opposites.

We’ll definitely be back. Hopefully, the snow will be just as deep, the skies just as blue — and maybe we’ll once again finish our ski day walking beside swans under the shade of a French villa.
