I have read sessions four, five, six, seven, and eight of the sixteen that make up García Márquez's Screenwriting Workshop. In the previous post, I presented sessions one, two, and three.
Wow! It's amazing how the story comes to life through the characters.
Márquez emphasizes that “dialogues should be informative, but at the same time convey the characters' personalities, attitudes, and moods” (p. 44), while each workshop participant adds actions and decisions.
I am struck by how Gabo makes you see that a character is not in the story on a whim; he makes you question their purpose, what they say, what they don't say, and what they do in the next chapter; when they appear, when they die, and why. It's about thinking about everything, predicting the future, living in the present without forgetting the past; to know it, to understand it, and to contextualize the events.
In the first part of the Screenwriting Workshop “I Rent Myself Out to Dream,” I told you that names like Alma, Don Diego, Rosafina, and Amparo came up. In these sessions, a teacher, schoolmates, a boyfriend, and a noisy television appeared, among others.
Here are some of their characteristics:

Don Diego, widower, father, a real tycoon. He'll fall into Alma's trap.
Rosafina is pregnant and is Doña Petra's daughter.

Me alquilo para soñar - Parte II
He leído las sesiones cuatro, cinco, seis, siete y ocho de las dieciséis que integran el Taller de Guion de García Márquez. En el post anterior les presenté las sesiones uno, dos y tres.
¡Vaya! Es impresionante cómo cobra vida la historia a través de los personajes.
Márquez destaca que "los diálogos deben ser informativos, pero al mismo tiempo dar el carácter de los personajes, una actitud, un estado de ánimo" (p.44); al tiempo que cada participante del Taller va sumando acciones y decisiones.
Me llama la atención cómo Gabo te hace ver que un personaje no está en la historia por capricho, te hace cuestionar su propósito, qué dice, qué no dice y qué hace en el siguiente capítulo; cuándo aparece, cuándo muere y por qué. Es pensar en todo, es predecir el futuro, viviendo el presente sin olvidar el pasado; para conocerlo, para entenderlo y para contextualizar los hechos.
En la primera parte del Taller de Guion "Me alquilo para soñar" les conté que surgieron nombres como Alma, Don Diego, Rosafina y Amparo. Ya en estas sesiones apareció una maestra, compañeritos de colegio, un novio, un televisor que hace ruido, entre otros.
Acá te comparto algunas de sus características:

Rosafina está embarazada y es la hija de Doña Petra.

En el siguiente post seguiremos realizando el taller. La historia se está poniendo buena. Llevamos la mitad de las sesiones creativas, luego viene el argumento final, la escaleta y el guion del capítulo final de este taller realizado en noviembre de 1987.
