I have a collection of books at home, and I can't wait to restock the shelf. I stood up and decided to pick up "A Stranger in the Mirror" by Sidney Sheldon. Actually, that book belongs to my brother, but there is this saying that goes, "Whatever belongs to your brother belongs to you too." Yes! So practically I own the book. 

Summary and Review

The novel follows the rise and fall of two ambitious people in Hollywood. It exposes the dark side of fame, power, and ambition, showing how both characters, in different ways, become strangers to themselves.

This story started with Paul Templarhaus and his wife, Frieda, who moved from different cities because of the deficit in their butcher business. Paul was a good butcher but a very bad businessman. He was more interested in writing poetry than in his butcher business. Frieda, who couldn't cope with all of these, decided to take over the business, and boom, the business started to flourish. She started making important decisions for the family, and soon this turned her into a tyrant. She made important decisions down to when they were supposed to have a child. She would force her husband to do things he didn't want to do.

Frieda got pregnant, Paul wanted a girl; however, Frieda wanted a boy. Finally, the baby was born, and it was a boy.  Tobias was his name. His mother took over the training of the boy and always told him that he was going to become a famous person. He didn't know why or how, but he just knew that his mother always told him that. His mother never smiled at him; however, he finally found the secret that made her smile one day. Mrs. Durkin, who was a neighbor, came to their house, and when she was leaving, he made several imitations of the woman. She laughed loudly, and finally he got the secret to making his mother smile.

When Toby reached age eighteen, he started sleeping around and unfortunately, he impregnated his classmate. He was called to the principal's office alongside his mother and the father of the girl he impregnated. Frieda immediately said that he would marry her, and that was final. Immediately they got home, she packed his bags and told him to go to New York. Yes! She meant it when she always told him that he was going to be famous. The girl he has impregnated won't drag him down.

Toby was devastated because she was the only one he loved, and he always dreamt of building a penthouse for her, but now she is gone. He couldn't attend the funeral because of the girl he impregnated.

August the fourteenth, 1939. He couldn't forget that day. It was the most important day of his life. The summer season was over, and the magician was out of work. How will Toby cope? He didn't have any other job. He was homeless and jobless.  Toby was finally allowed to perform in a club; however, he wasn't engaged by any of his audience, and this made him want to cry. After a while, he finally got a job and an audience; however, he was forced to marry a mistress he slept with. After the wedding, he thought of different ways to divorce her.
