Introduction
Squid Game is a South Korean movie, which involves playing Korean children's games, and the winner goes home with a huge sum of money. This was a game that was watched by some VIPs who dropped this huge sum of money and made a bet on the players whom they feel will win.
This movie came out some years back; however, it was only season 1 that was out. I didn't watch it because the hype was just too much, coupled with the fact that they were not done with the series. I sincerely do not like suspense at all. So, I decided to watch the movie when they release season 2 and season 3. I finally watched the movie on Netflix after a lot of deliberations, and fr, I give it 5 stars 🌟.
Gi Hun's Story
At the beginning of the movie, Gi Hun, who lives with his mother, was in a lot of debt. Also, because he couldn't fend for the family, his wife had to divorce him and take responsibility for their child. After a while, he was sitting alone at the subway station, and a tall, handsome man came to meet him. He offered him a sum of 10 won if he won the game, and if he lost, he would also pay the tall man the same sum.
However, because he didn't have money, he could pay with a slap. Gi Hun thought this game was easy; however, he already slapped himself a lot of times because he lost. Finally, he won and wanted to pay him back for all the slaps by slapping him back, but nah, the agreement was to give him a sum of 10 won (in Korea). After giving him the money, he gave him a card with a number and three shapes at the back (triangle, circle, and square).
When Gi Hun got home, he called the number, and a place was agreed for them to meet. When Gi Hun got there, the driver asked for a password, and he said, "Red light, green light." The door opened and he got in. Immediately after he entered, he slept off and finally found himself in a room filled with a lot of people. His clothes were changed to a cloth with a number written on it. He was number "456."
The Games
Game 1: Red Light, Green Light
The first game they played was "Red Light, Green Light," a game played by children in Korea. There was a big doll that had a sensor. Once it says "green light," you'd have to move swiftly; however, once it says "red light," you'll stop and make sure the doll doesn't see you move. Initially, they all thought you might just be sent home if you lose; however, this was not the case.
All those whom the doll caught were killed, and the remaining people were scared, and they all made a vote, either to stay or to leave. However, because of their debts, they felt like it was better to stay there than go home running away from shark loans. Gi Hun and some other people left; however, they decided to come back when they found out that life outside was hard.
Game 2: Sugar Honeycombs (The Shapes)
Finally, Gi Hun finally made friends there. He saw a neighbor from home there and also made friends with number 001. The second game was to cut out a particular shape. There were four shapes (circle, triangle, umbrella, and square). Umbrella was the hardest, and that's what Gi Hun picked.
However, his friend knew the game beforehand but didn't tell him because he wanted to win the cash prize (beware of your friends). Luckily, they all passed that round. After that, they all started killing themselves for the cash price.
Game 3:Tug-of-War
The next round of the game was tug-of-war. At first, Gi Hun was scared because they had two women on their team and an old man. Gi Hun and his team also passed that round thanks to their strategies.
Game 4: Glass Bridge
The next game was about mirrors; hmm, this was very tricky. You must not step on the mirror that is not strong; if you do, you'll fall and the person will die. A lot of people died, but luckily at one point, there was a man who worked in a glass factory, so he could tell the difference between the two, but later they turned off the light, and the man couldn't tell the difference anymore.
Game 5: Marbles
The second to last game was about a game of marbles. Hmmm, I was kind of emotional here because they had to pair themselves in two without knowing what the game was. Finally, they found out that only one person out of the two people in that group has to make it. It was a hard decision, but that was the rule of the game.
Player 456, who is Gi Hun, was on a team with player 001, who was an old man. He kind of cheated the man; he thought the man didn't know because he was old, but he understood everything. A lot of people died after this round due to plenty of killing in the night; now it was only Gi Hun, his neighbor, and a girl that were left. The girl later died too; the neighbor killed her.
Game 6:Squid Game (Final Round)
The last game was "Squid Game." Player 456 was determined to harm his neighbor because he killed the girl. However, he wanted to give up, but the neighbor killed himself and played 456 and got the cash prize.
He was dropped on the street and saw the ATM card; he tried it and inputted the PIN, which was "0456"; he saw the amount that was there and was surprised. However, he never spent the money on himself. He felt like it was blood money at the expense of his friends.
Ending and Suspense
Gi Hun tried going to meet his daughter and found that same tall man playing the game with a guy, and he gave him that exact card. Gi Hun was so angry and was determined that he'll make sure he stops the game.
This was how season one ended, and there was a lot of suspense because do you think he would be able to stop a game that has always been played annually?
