Adapt or Exit: Lessons from Generational Changes at Work

I am currently working in an international NGO. Here, I have noticed a unique thing about the work style and process, the difference in work style, style and mentality between the old workers and the new generation of workers.

Old workers usually work based on experience. They have a specific routine, every task is done step by step and systematically. They take a lot of time while preparing reports because they want to check everything and be sure. In team meetings, they like to discuss in detail and find references in experience and systems in advance to solve problems. As a result, the work is slow but accurate and if there is any risk, they think about it in advance and remedy it.

On the other hand, the new generation of workers move forward in their work style very quickly. They can handle multiple tasks at once, depending on technology and software. Their process is often flexible and has a mentality of innovation or bringing new processes. They often consider routine or long verification as a waste of time. Using quick reports online tools, and making decisions in a short time is their work style.

Due to this difference, a kind of complexity is created in the office. Older employees feel that the new generation is ignoring rules and regulations or experience, while newer employees feel that the old processes are not keeping up with the times. I have personally seen some older employees lose their jobs at the end of the year because they cannot adapt to the new process. Some new employees are also leaving because they fail to show results quickly.

From my own experience, I can say that the organization is strengthened by the combination of old and new generations. Combining innovation with experience increases the speed of work and reduces mistakes, and balance is maintained within the team. New employees should learn from experienced ones and gradually understand the importance of experience. Experienced ones should adopt new technologies and fast working methods.

I will say one thing that if the type of work and process is judged only by age or time, many valuable people can be left out. But if we have an attitude of mutual learning and adaptation, then any challenge in the office can be easily handled.
