Why Communication Skills Define Success ?

There is a very common thing in our society that the more degrees you have, the more respect and opportunities you will have. Parents teach their children from a young age that if you study well, you will get a good job. While this is true in one sense, it is not the whole picture. Because the reality in 2025 is that having a degree alone does not bring success. It also requires communication skills, confidence, and the ability to express your thoughts clearly.

I have not been in this new job for long. However, in this short time, I have met many different types of people. That day, I spoke to someone who has been working in the same position in an international NGO for many years. He is absolutely perfect in terms of experience, skills, and desk work. But still, he has not received any promotion till date.

After investigating, I found out that his problem is actually that he cannot communicate properly with people. When he speaks, he talks a lot but cannot explain the real point clearly. He feels uncomfortable to start a conversation with someone new. Even while giving a presentation, he trembles with fear and becomes nervous. However, no one has complained about the quality of his work.

This is where real education comes in. In the workplace, book knowledge alone is not enough. No matter how great a degree you have, if you cannot explain it to anyone, if you cannot present your ideas confidently, the value of that degree is greatly reduced. In our working life, we do not just sit at a desk and work, we have to talk to colleagues, bosses, clients, partners and many other people every day. If we cannot speak correctly at the right time, misunderstandings occur, work is damaged, and the path to one's own development is also blocked. Therefore, communication skills can no longer be considered as additional or optional, but should be seen as an integral part of our career.

I think our education system is also deficient in this area. We do not spend as much time teaching confident speaking techniques as we do in school and college. However, if students could have been taught from an early age to give presentations, participate in group discussions or get to know new people, then they would not have had so many problems later in their working life.

So what is the solution??? The solution is to create a balance. Yes, a higher degree is necessary because it will give you theoretical knowledge, analytical skills and a foundation for solving problems. But to apply that knowledge in life, you need communication skills. The combination of these two creates real career growth.

So, in my opinion, no one will be successful just by having a degree. A degree is your first step, but to climb up, your voice, confidence and communication skills are the real strength.
