Located within Native American tribal land Havasu Canyon is a true desert oasis - with multiple waterfalls cascading into turquoise pools and contrasting perfectly with the vibrant red sandstone cliffs. The vivid blue-green color of the pools is due to high calcium carbonate concentration in the water and not Photoshop trickery.
Getting there is not easy as the waterfalls and the nearby town of Supai are accessible only by foot or helicopter - in fact Supai is the only town in the US where mail is still delivered by mules. The more challenging part however has been getting permits as they sell on a first-come first-served basis within a few minutes for the whole year.
The waterfall in the photo called Mooney Falls is the largest of the waterfalls in Havasu Canyon (60 meters or 200 feet tall) and the hardest to get to - the route down requires crawling through tunnels and then using chains, ladders and steps carved into the stone to descend to its pool.
