Hello, Hive friends: how are you?
Something funny happened to me a few days ago: I had planned to take some photos on the Malecón last Saturday afternoon, and when I got there, I noticed that something was different. The entire avenue was empty, with no cars passing by. Why? After a while, I realized that there was an athletics competition, or rather a marathon. I thought, "This is where I'll take my photos this afternoon." I quickly looked for a strategic place to sit, with a good viewing angle, and waited for the competitors to start passing by.
These snapshots 📸 are my submission for the #monomad challenge by @monochromes and @brumest.
The front runners were very lively, keeping up a good pace, and to be honest, it reminded me of the Olympics. At that moment, I got carried away with my sports photographer persona (or at least trying to appear as one) and started giving it my all.
But, well, what is this man doing with his cart selling candy and beer at the competition? With his enthusiasm, people ran and, behind him, he marketed his products.
And that wasn't all: when some of the competitors saw me with my camera, they stopped so I could take their picture, posed, and then continued running. It happened several times; I didn't know whether to laugh or worry about the future of athletics in Cuba.
Each group of girls wanted their photo taken (Sir, take some for social media!), that was all the time. Clearly, what competition could they win like that?
Luckily, among the few who were there, some were running at a good pace and that's how we got a winner. Anyway, it was fun for me; I imagine that at some point they would have had to reprimand those athletes for their eagerness to take photos. Anyway, that's how we Cubans are: unpredictable, but always in good spirits.

Hola, amigos de Hive: ¿cómo están?
Hace unos días me pasó algo gracioso: tenía planificado hacer algunas fotos en el Malecón la tarde del sábado pasado y, cuando llegué, noté que algo era diferente. Toda la avenida estaba vacía, no pasaban autos. ¿Por qué? Al rato me di cuenta de que se trataba de una competencia de atletismo, o más bien un maratón. Pensé: «Aquí mismo tengo mis fotos de la tarde». Busqué rápidamente un lugar estratégico para sentarme, con buen ángulo de visión, y esperé a que comenzaran a pasar los competidores.
Los primeros puestos iban muy animados, con buen ritmo de carrera, y la verdad es que aquello me recordaba a las olimpiadas. En ese momento, me subieron los aires de fotógrafo deportivo (o de intentar aparentarlo) y comencé a dar lo mejor de mí.
Pero, bueno, ¿qué hace este señor con su carrito vendiendo caramelos y cervezas en la competición? Con el entusiasmo que llevaba, la gente corría y, detrás él, hacía marketing de sus productos.
Y no quedó ahí la cosa: cuando algunas competidoras me veían con la cámara, se paraban para que les hiciera fotos, posaban y seguían corriendo. Sucedió varias veces; ya no sabía si reírme o preocuparme por el futuro del atletismo en Cuba.
Cada grupo de chicas quería su foto (¡Señor, háganos unas para las redes!), eso era todo el tiempo. Claramente, ¿qué competencia podrían ganar así?
Menos mal que, entre los pocos que habían, algunos iban a buen ritmo y de ahí salió un ganador. De todas formas, aquello fue divertido para mí; imagino que en algún momento tendrían que haber llamado la atención a esos atletas por su afán de hacerse fotos. En fin, que así somos los cubanos: impredecibles, pero con el buen humor siempre por delante.
