August: Handheld fans

Hand fans or folding fans are structures made of a set of wooden, metal, or plastic rods with paper or fabric. They open and close to cool our face and neck. The interesting thing is that, since they are foldable, we can carry them in our bags and use them in places like churches or other enclosed spaces where the heat is unbearable. This is my first folding fan, which I bought many years ago. I liked it because it was small, but when I saw that it was made of paper, I decided to keep it in a box until today, when I am showing it to you.   --- This fan is from the princess dolls. It belonged to my daughter when she was a child. I bought a Princess magazine, and this gift came with it.   --- My husband's sister-in-law has several fans that relatives sent them from Spain. They are very elaborate and beautiful. I wanted to contact her to ask her to send me photos, but she is not in town. I would have liked to share her collection. This fan is made of wood and paper. I also kept it because it looked very fragile.   --- In 2019, my mother-in-law passed away, and it was very hot during the masses. My husband's sister-in-law would occasionally lend me her fan, and I carried one with me every day. So I told my daughter that I needed a foldable handheld fan, and she bought these at an Asian store. They are stronger, made of plastic, fabric, and lace. I have used these, and they have been very useful during power outages.     --- This fan is a restoration project because it was a wire frame with a wooden support. It belonged to my mother until one day I saw it and asked her if I could fix it because it had been out of use for several years. Motivated by this initiative, I decided to knit.
