"Weapons" - I needed to see something like this

I'm glad that the latest series and movies I've decided to watch have left at least a pleasant impression on me. It seems that being strictly selective has allowed me to avoid wasting my time watching things I don't like, and boy, have I been through several situations like that. We live in times when everything around us happens very quickly, and it seems like there aren't enough hours in the day to do everything we want to do, so when we decide to invest some time in entertainment, it's important that it's worth it.

So today I want to talk to you about Weapons, a film from this year directed by Zach Cregger, whom we know for interesting films such as Barbarian and Companion, both of which I really liked. The genre of “Weapons” is horror and mystery, and it features a cast of actors that is nothing to sneeze at, including Josh Brolin and Benedict Wong, but there are other well-known actors who complement the different scenes or acts that characterize this film very well. I'll talk more about that later.

To give you some context about the film, it takes us to a small town where 17 children suddenly disappear, with the peculiarity that they all belonged to the same classroom. This aroused a lot of suspicion about the teacher, as she is the only person in common among the 17 children, but after the police conducted the necessary investigations, they determined that she was innocent. Of all the students in the class, only one child attended school on the day the others disappeared. He seemed to know absolutely nothing about it and was also ruled out as a suspect.

The town's various surveillance cameras show the missing children running away from their homes during the night in a strange and simultaneous manner, which suggests that something paranormal was involved, but we police know that such things do not exist. The desperate parents accused the teacher because they had no one else to blame; she was the only thing all the children had in common, considering that they were all in the same classroom. Thus, the teacher's life became a nightmare, as the distraught parents never missed an opportunity to blame her whenever they could.

One day, the teacher followed the only child in the classroom who did not disappear home. She boldly approached the strange house and saw something very strange there. It is from there that a series of mysterious and terrifying events begin to unravel, in which death plays a fundamental role. I won't tell you any more about the movie so as not to spoil it for you, but I will say that there are many more interesting events to come.

A very interesting aspect of this film is how it is divided into different acts in which the events are seen from the perspective of the different characters involved. The story gradually comes together until the timeline unifies and the film reaches its climax. I also liked the use of sound effects and music in the darkest moments. I think they complemented the most disturbing scenes quite well, which undoubtedly added to the experience.

I think this is a film that, while not perfect, perfectly fulfills its function of entertaining and scaring. There are some jump scares and a lot of tension in several scenes that honestly made my nerves tingle. I liked the way the story was built up to an ending that may even be repulsive, but I think it leaves a strong impression on the viewer. “Weapons” is a film that seems like a traditional horror and suspense movie, but believe me, it's more than that. I give it a score of 7.5 out of 10, and I encourage you to watch it.
