At Music Zone we want to encourage genuine talent through participation with a musical instrument. When performing a song on an instrument, the musician has the opportunity to demonstrate their level of technical mastery, expressiveness and dedication in their performance. We want each participant to develop authentic musical skills and cultivate the art of performance. The voice is a wonderful musical instrument, but when accompanied by an instrument, the performer exhibits coordination, rhythm, pitch and dynamics. The interaction between the singer and their instrument adds a layer of complexity that is appreciated by the judges of our music competitions. We have had the opportunity to observe artists with little instrumental experience, but who over time have managed to improve and excel. In our musical community we recognise and value effort. A musical instrument enriches the experience and the energy of the audience because the effort and skill is perceived in real time.

When someone plays a musical instrument it sets a more equitable and fairer stage. Imagine for a moment that one person wins the contest with a karaoke track, and the one who made an effort to play a musical instrument does not win. That could cause disappointment and convey that an injustice has been done. Both the Hive Music Festival and the Song Challenge promote musical growth and development. Our goal is to encourage musicians to explore and master their instruments. If you don't have a musical instrument, you can ask a friend to join you. Working collaboratively makes the performance more appreciated by the judges. If you only play a musical instrument and don't sing, the track should be a complement, not the protagonist.
