### Xerophytic plants in my workplace

I don't find it strange to have a xerophytic plant in our garden that, instead of having leaves with pointed tips, flowers with petals, and a wooden stem, as is more common, this specimen instead has stems, spines, and pulpy bulbs called "prickly pears."
Also known as succulents, they have a specialized organ for storing water for long periods.

Specifically, the cactus I'm showing you today in my photo summary is called the Nopal or Indian Fig. The fruit is known as pitaya and is edible.
It's worth noting that this plant is planted in my small garden at home, right in front of the window of my personal office, where I've been working diligently as a Hiveblockchain publisher for eight years.
Beyond being the place where I remain active 24/7, it's also my spiritual retreat and my favorite workplace par excellence.

In the close-up, you can see the "areoles," or small protuberances containing the cactus's spines. These apicules are very sensitive to the touch and serve as a defense mechanism for the plant against herbivores. They also serve to capture water from dew or fog.
I usually take care to maintain this plant, being careful not to get hurt by the spines, as they penetrate the skin and are almost impossible to remove afterward, given that they are very thin and almost invisible.

This type of plant grows easily in the home garden. They can be planted alongside other species without creating problems of parasitism or segregation. They are also ideal for complementing the decoration of our home's facade, offering a vibrant, natural green color.
I planted it next to a lemon balm and a lily. I find the mix of species very pleasant because each one offers contrasting colors, sizes, and different shapes. I like to sit on the furniture and watch the hummingbirds arrive to collect nectar.
All kinds of insects also come: bees, beetles, wasps, and butterflies, especially in the mornings.
All photos are my own. They were taken with my equipment: Tecno Spark 10-C.
