El pasado sábado, en el estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado de la ciudad de Quito, se disputó la final de la Copa América Femenina entre las dos mejores selecciones de Suramérica; Brasil y Colombia ofrecieron un espectáculo a la altura del acontecimiento en dónde ambas selecciones demostraron un gran esfuerzo y fútbol en lo que fue la mejor final disputada por mujeres.
Last Saturday, at the Rodrigo Paz Delgado Stadium in Quito, the final of the Women's Copa América was played between the two best teams in South America. Brazil and Colombia put on a show worthy of the occasion, with both teams demonstrating great effort and skill in what was the best women's final ever played.
En el primer encuentro entre ambas selecciones demostraron igualdad de condiciones futbolísticas y estaba seguro de que en esta oportunidad no existiría una gran diferencia y me alegró estar en lo cierto, aunque lo que me sorprendió fue la actitud valiente y decidida de Colombia en hacer daño a una gran rival y es que para ser la mejor, debes justamente ganar a la mejor y eso lo rectifica Brasil al ser la máxima ganadora del torneo. La selección colombiana jugó por completo un gran encuentro, aunque los primeros 30 minutos demostraron que debieron merecer un mejor premio, pero por muchas ocasiones generadas por Colombia, de igual manera muchas fueron contrarrestadas por las defensoras brasileñas quienes junto al desempeño de la portera, Lorena, mantuvieron el arco en cero hasta la aparición de Caicedo quien por fin pudo derrumbar el muro brasileño; lamentablemente todo buen desempeño se vio afectado por la primera desconcentración de las jugadoras cafetera, en una jugada finalizando el primer tiempo, una acción anti futbolística que recibió el beneficio arbitral, otra injusticia más en este torneo demostrando un mal desempeño de las árbitras, ya que influyó en el resultado el cual si se hubiera sancionado de manera adecuada, seguramente se priva al público del gran espectáculo que fue esta final, pero también se demuestra que todos los involucrados (árbitros) en ese importante juego cumplieron de manera correcta.
In the first match between the two teams, they demonstrated equal footballing ability, and I was sure that this time there would not be a big difference. I was glad to be right, although what surprised me was Colombia's courageous and determined attitude in trying to hurt a great rival. To be the best, you have to beat the best, and Brazil proved that by being the tournament's top winner. The Colombian team played a great game overall, although the first 30 minutes showed that they deserved a better result. However, despite the many chances created by Colombia, many were countered by the Brazilian defenders who, together with the performance of goalkeeper Lorena, kept a clean sheet until the appearance of Caicedo, who finally managed to break down the Brazilian wall. Unfortunately, all the good work was undermined by the Colombian players' first lapse in concentration in a move at the end of the first half, an anti-footballing action that benefited the referee, yet another injustice in this tournament demonstrating the poor performance of the referees, as it influenced the result, which, had it been penalized appropriately, would surely have deprived the public of the great spectacle that was this final. However, it also shows that everyone involved (referees) in that important game performed correctly.
En el segundo tiempo, Colombia se repuso del error cometido y siguió con la misión de alcanzar su primer gran título y casi lo consiguen; esto lo digo porque hasta en dos oportunidades estuvieron por encima del marcador, primero fue al realizar necesarios ajustes en dónde no se debería esperar a Brasil tan atrás lo cual las haría ser un equipo más compacto y estar más cerca de la portería rival, el otro fue usar la agilidad de Caicedo y la fuerza de Ramírez para derrumbar la ahora frágil pareja de centrales brasileñas que dependieron más que nunca de su portera para no caer goleadas y perder su segunda final de las 10 disputadas; lamentablemente para Colombia, el talento de Brasil que se guardaba en la banca era mayor y eso fue evidente cuando dos atacantes que entraron en el segundo tiempo anotaron los goles suficientes para mantener con vida a su equipo; una de esas jugadoras es la mítica y gran emblema del fútbol femenino, me refiero a Marta que anotó el gol del empate a falta de un minuto para finalizar el tiempo oficial y anotaría el cuarto gol para Brasil en el tiempo extra, un gol que al final fue contrarrestado por otro golazo de Santos que sellaría la definición de penales para saber quién serie el campeón de la Copa América 2025.
In the second half, Colombia recovered from their mistake and continued their quest to win their first major title, and they almost succeeded. I say this because they were ahead on the scoreboard on two occasions. First, they made the necessary adjustments, realizing that they should not expect Brazil to sit so deep, which would make them a more compact team and bring them closer to the opposition's goal. The other was to use Caicedo's agility and Ramírez's strength to break down the now fragile Brazilian center-back pairing, who relied more than ever on their goalkeeper to avoid a heavy defeat and losing their second final out of 10 played. Unfortunately for Colombia, Brazil's talent on the bench was greater, and that was evident when two attackers who came on in the second half scored enough goals to keep their team alive. One of those players is the legendary and great icon of women's soccer, Marta, who scored the equalizer with one minute left in regulation time and would score Brazil's fourth goal in extra time, a goal that was ultimately countered by another great goal from Santos, which would seal the penalty shootout to determine who would be the 2025 Copa América champion.
Al final, la paridad entre ambas selecciones se rompe por el fallo del último penal de Colombia y lo que generó otro título más a Brasil y es que hasta en los penaltis hubo tensión, triste y alegría, un cierre épico tal como fue todo el encuentro entre estas dos selecciones que son las mejores de Suramérica y confirman ese estatus a repetir ese enfrentamiento por final consecutiva en el torneo más importante del fútbol femenino de este lado del mundo; creo que lo sucedido en este torneo, tanto en el enfrentamiento por fase de grupos, así como la final, ha creado una rivalidad fuerte entre ambas selecciones y que es seguro que se repetirá en los próximos años, ya que ninguna otra (por ahora) está al nivel de brasileñas y colombianas y las federaciones de los demás países deberán ver y copiar el trabajo que hacen ambas para poder competir contra ellas.
In the end, the tie between the two teams was broken by Colombia's failure to score the last penalty, which led to another title for Brazil. Even the penalty shootout was tense, with sadness and joy, an epic ending just like the whole match between these two teams, which are the best in South America and confirm that status by repeating that confrontation for the second consecutive final in the most important women's soccer tournament on this side of the world. I believe that what happened in this tournament, both in the group stage and in the final, has created a strong rivalry between the two teams, one that is sure to be repeated in the coming years, as no other team (for now) is at the level of Brazil and Colombia, and the federations of other countries will have to watch and copy the work done by both teams in order to compete against them.
