 **Hello, cinema fans.** Let's talk about another dystopian science fiction action movie aimed at young adults and adults. Although it enjoyed moderate success at the box office, it did not receive the same praise as other films of its kind, such as **Maze Runner** or **The Hunger Games**. Meet one of those post-apocalyptic movies that least caught my attention since I started using my reasoning skills. >!  ### Plot The film begins with a monologue that tells us about a future where the world has been plunged into chaos by wars. Humanity made the decision to divide itself into several factions in order to establish rules and specific tasks. This brought apparent peace for a hundred years. In what appears to be a post-apocalyptic and confined **Chicago**, we see how society is clearly divided into five factions. These are: **Abnegation**, **Cordiality**, **Sincerity**, **Daring**, and **Erudition**. Then we meet **Beatrice Prior**, who is from Abnegation and, despite coming from an exemplary family, feels torn about what she wants to be in the future. At age 16, all young people must take a test that will help them decide which faction to choose for the rest of their lives. However, our protagonist does not do well on this test. >! I don't really remember how I found out about this movie, to be honest. At the time, I wasn't as much of a film buff as I am now. Over time, I learned about the popularity of this film and its subsequent trilogy of films that were released in theaters. Or rather, more than popularity, it was one of those failures at the box office, with critics, and with audiences that make it clear that not every film adaptation of a successful novel is equally successful. Leaving aside the fact that the boom in superhero movies and other science fiction subgenres reached its peak in that decade, dystopian movies for young adults proved to be a failure with this and other subsequent failed attempts. But anyway, you came here to read an honest opinion about this film, and that's what I'll give you. Starting with the plot, it is both interesting and ironic how it begins with an apparent vision of a utopian society in a clearly dystopian and post-apocalyptic world. The most striking aspect of this is the way people are classified into factions and the treatment they receive. This, of course, is an indirect message to today's society and how the upper class treats the lower class and vice versa. The main theme is not only that, but as we learn a little about **Beatrice Piror** and the result she gets on the test that everyone takes at age 16, we notice that there are certain disturbing secrets and mysteries at the heart of this supposedly peaceful society. After the protagonist chooses to switch to **Dauntless**, we see more of what the different factions are like from the inside, especially this faction that has attracted Beatrice since she was a child. >! Con el tiempo fue que llegué a saber de la popularidad que tuvo esta cinta y su posterior saga de tres películas que llegaron a sacar en cines. O bueno, más que popularidad, fue de esos fracasos tanto en taquilla como con la crítica y la audiencia que te dejan en claro que no toda adaptación cinematográfica de una novela exitosa sea algo igual de exitoso. Dejando de lado que el auge del cine de superhéroes y otros subgéneros de la ciencia ficción llegaron a su punto máximo en aquella década, el cine de películas distópicas para jóvenes adultos demostró ser un fracaso con este y otros fallidos intentos posteriores. Pero bueno, ustedes llegaron aquí para leer una opinión sincera acerca de esta cinta y eso es lo que les daré. > > Empezando por su trama, es tanto interesante como irónica la forma en la que empieza con una visión aparente de una sociedad utópica sobre un mundo claramente distópico y post-apocalíptico. Lo más llamativo de esto es la forma en la que clasifican a la gente con fracciones y el trato que reciben. Esto, claro está, es un mensaje indirecto hacia la sociedad actual y cómo los de la clase alta trata a los de la clase baja y viceversa. El tema principal no solo es ese, sino que al conocer un poco sobre **Beatrice Piror** y el resultado que obtiene en la prueba que todos hacen a los 16 años, notamos que hay ciertos secretos y misterios inquietantes en el fondo de esta supuesta sociedad pacífica. Luego de que la protagonista escogiera cambiarse a **Osadía**, vemos más de fondo cómo son las distintas fracciones desde dentro, sobre todo de esta fracción que tanto le atrae Beatrice desde pequeña.

 Don't get me wrong when I say that the theme of a seemingly utopian society that ends up being a completely oppressive, classist, and extremist dystopia is something that has been seen many times in similar works. That's not to say I don't like it, because the way the story unfolds, showing us the fate of certain factions and revealing the main enemy, is interesting, to say the least. The plot twists are a bit predictable, but then again, there's not much to expect from a film like this, to be honest. As someone who has not seen any of the films in the famous **Hunger Games** saga, I cannot make any comparisons with that franchise (nor would I do so if I had). But what I do know is that the way they mix action with everything we see in this story reminds me of any dystopian action film where the protagonist adapts and trains to become the hero and savior of the world. I've probably spoiled the whole movie with that last statement, as with most action films of this style. The thing is, aside from the potentially interesting plot and the story of a futuristic, dystopian, class-based world, the characters and their development are not the best thing about this film. I'm not saying that the cast did a bad job, quite the contrary. It's just that the way they are presented and developed throughout the film is somewhat predictable and superficial (like the plot). Again, I'm not saying it's bad, as it's normal for an action-drama film like this to have its shortcomings in terms of original character development. The very concept of an "*original character*" is highly subjective, as is everything else. But for someone like me who has already seen and talked about dozens of dystopian and post-apocalyptic science fiction films, this is not entirely to my liking. >! Con esto no digo que no me guste, ya que la manera en la que se desarrolla la historia mostrándonos el destino de ciertas fracciones y la revelación del enemigo principal es por lo menos interesante. Los giros de trama son un poco predecibles, pero tampoco es que haya mucho que esperar de una cinta como esta, la verdad. Como alguien que no ha visto ninguna película de la famosa saga **The Hunger Games** no puedo hacer ninguna comparación con dicha franquicia (y tampoco lo haría en el caso contrario). Pero lo que sí sé es que la forma en la que mezclan la acción con todo lo que vemos en esta historia me hace pensar en cualquier película de acción distópica donde el protagonista se adapta y entrena para convertirse en el héroe y salvador del mundo. > > Probablemente con esto último haya spoileado toda la película, al igual que la mayoría de obras de acción de este estilo. Y es que, dejando de lado la trama potencialmente interesante y la historia de un mundo futurista distópico y clasista, el tema de los personajes y sus desarrollos no son de lo mejor que se pueda extraer de esta cinta. No digo que el elenco de actores haya hecho un mal trabajo, más bien todo lo contrario. Solo que la forma en la que nos lo presentan y los desarrollan a lo largo de la película es un tanto predecible y superficial (como su trama). Repito, no digo que esté mal, ya que es normal que una cinta de acción y drama como esta tenga sus detalles en cuanto a la construcción de personajes originales. Ya de por sí el hecho de un “*personaje original*” es de lo más subjetivo que se puede hablar, así como todo lo demás. Pero para alguien como yo que ya ha visto y hablado de decenas de películas de ciencia ficción distópicas y post-apocalípticas, esto no es del todo mi agrado.

 Both the protagonist and some of the secondary characters do well to display personalities and characteristics that set them apart from the majority. Especially in a story aimed at a classist and oppressive society full of absurd rules, it is normal for the protagonist to be a rebellious, impulsive, and courageous character who breaks all the rules and goes against them. However, she also has her predictable traits that make her just another character in an action movie. I'm not saying that adding romance to this work is a bad thing, as it seems that they even take their time to develop a relationship between **Beatrice** and **Four**. But, I repeat, it's not something that breaks with the predictable clichés in this type of work. As for the action in general, it has its good moments of tension, its good action sequences, fights, and chases. But there's nothing that makes you say "*WOW!*" It's just decent for what you'd expect from this movie. Last but not least, let's talk about the technical and visual aspects of this feature film, which, by the way, lasts more than two hours. While it's not a **Hollywood** blockbuster, it manages to be a decent and very well-produced film that takes advantage of the dystopian and post-apocalyptic atmosphere of this story to give us unique, though not entirely attractive, settings. The style of photography, the shots, the moving shots, the visual effects, and the mixed color palette are the most noteworthy aspects. There is also the style of clothing of the factions and the places or environments in which they are found and how they differ from each other. The sound effects are fine, but they are not the best in the world either. As for the soundtrack, it is of good quality and provides a well-set backdrop with exciting background music. In short, this is a dystopian, action-packed film that I would only recommend watching if you are a big fan of this type of film for young people. > #### *Personally, I give it a rating of 7/10 in terms of the science fiction and action genre.* >! Sobre todo en una historia dirigida a una sociedad clasista y opresora repleta de reglas absurdas es normal que la protagonista sea un personaje rebelde, impulsivo y valiente que rompe todas las reglas y va en contra de la misma. Sin embargo, también tiene sus detalles predecibles que la hace un personaje más de una cinta de acción y ya. El tema del romance no digo que esté mal añadirlo en esta obra, ya que parece que hasta se toman su tiempo para desarrollar una relación entre **Beatriz** y **Cuatro**. Pero, repito, no es algo que rompa con los clichés predecibles en este tipo de obras. En cuanto a acción en general tiene sus buenos momentos de tensión, sus buenas secuencias de acción, peleas y persecuciones. Pero no hay nada que te haga decir “*¡WOW!*”, solo es algo decente para lo que uno espera de esta película. > > Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado técnico y visual de este largometraje que -por cierto- dura más de dos horas. Si bien no es una superproducción de **Hollywood**, consigue convertirse en una cinta decente y muy bien producida que aprovecha un poco el ambiente distópico y post-apocalíptico de esta historia para darnos escenarios únicos, aunque no del todo atractivos. El estilo de fotografías, los planos, las tomas en movimiento, los efectos visuales o la misma paleta de colores mixta es de lo más destacable. También está el estilo de vestimenta de las fracciones y los lugares o entornos en los que se encuentran y cómo se diferencian cada uno. Los efectos de sonido están bien, pero tampoco es que sea de lo mejor del mundo. En cuanto a la banda sonora, hay que aceptar que tiene una buena calidad y escenarios bien ambientados con música de fondo que emociona bastante.
