When I think of the word "beach," I imagine burning sun, warm sand, and gentle waves. As a Colombian, I’m used to our coasts being warm embraces, with soft winds and a climate that makes you want to stay for hours under the sun. That’s why arriving in Praia Grande, in São Paulo state, at this time of year was a total shock to my expectations.
Siempre que pienso en la palabra “playa”, me vienen a la mente imágenes de sol ardiente, arena caliente y mar tibio. Como colombiano, estoy acostumbrado a que nuestras costas sean un abrazo cálido donde el viento es suave y el clima invita a quedarse horas bajo el sol. Por eso, llegar a Praia Grande, en el estado de São Paulo, en esta época del año, fue un choque total para mis expectativas.
The city’s architecture has that urban seaside style: tall buildings facing the ocean, long boardwalks, and open spaces to enjoy the view. But during this season, the beach changes its personality. There are fewer tourists, more silence, and a calm, almost melancholic atmosphere, as if the place itself was resting after the summer crowds.
La arquitectura de la ciudad tiene ese toque de balneario urbano: edificios altos frente al mar, malecones largos para caminar y espacios abiertos para disfrutar de la vista. Pero en esta temporada, la playa cambia de personalidad. Hay menos turistas, más silencio y un ambiente casi melancólico, como si el lugar se recogiera en sí mismo para descansar del bullicio del verano.
Walking on the cold sand, feeling the wind carry salt and moisture, was a unique experience. I was wrapped in a jacket and scarf—something I’d never imagine doing on a Colombian beach. Still, there was something hypnotic about the scene: the constant crash of waves, the cloudy sky, and that sense of vastness only the sea can give.
Caminar por la arena fría, sintiendo que el viento arrastra consigo un poco de sal y humedad, fue una experiencia única. Estaba abrigado con chaqueta y bufanda, algo que jamás imaginaría hacer en una playa de Colombia. Aun así, había algo hipnótico en ese paisaje: el sonido constante de las olas, el ciel
o nublado, y esa sensación de inmensidad que solo el mar puede dar.
This visit reminded me that the beauty of a beach isn’t always in the heat or the sunburn. Sometimes, it’s in those cold, windy days that invite you to slow down, look at the ocean, and let the waves speak to you.
Esta visita me recordó que el encanto de una playa no siempre está en el calor o en broncearse bajo el sol. A veces, está en esos días fríos y ventosos que te invitan a mirar el mar con calma, a pensar y a dejarte llevar por el sonido de las olas.
