Hello Everyone, Hope you are all well. Today I am sharing my review of Lookism, an amazing animated series I watched on Netflix. The series is about a boy who can live in two different bodies, one ordinary and the other attractive. Through this, the importance of society's view of appearance, confidence and mental beauty is beautifully highlighted. I really enjoyed watching the series. The story is emotional, thought-provoking and absolutely worth watching. If you have time, you should also watch it.

Lookism takes place in a society where people's appearance and physical appearance determine their worth in the eyes of others. The central character of the story is Park Hyung-suk (English name Daniel Park). He is a fat, ordinary and unattractive boy who has had many hardships in his life: humiliation by friends, bullying at school, lack of self-confidence, and sadness in the eyes of his mother. ‎

‎ ‎With this new body, he gains respect, good treatment, popularity, and self-confidence for the first time in his life. But the experience of his old body still haunts him. He now finds himself in a complex double life, with great opportunities on one side, and reality and mental conflict on the other. Hyung-suk enrolls in a new school. In his new body, he sees how society values and loves a 'handsome' person more. He joins a music club, makes friends, and is respected by his classmates. In particular, two characters named Vasco and Deok-hwa play an important role in his life. But when he works or roams the city in his old body, no one pays attention to him, but rather despises him. ‎

‎ ‎The main protagonist of the story. Having two bodies, he sees two opposite sides of society. The opportunities that his new body brings to him are enjoyable, but they also make him question his own identity and self-esteem. Hyung-suk's mental anguish and struggle to find his place are the biggest strength of the story. A shy but talented rapper. Although he has a good voice, society does not want to accept him because his appearance is not 'attractive'. But Hyung-suk brings his voice to the fore with his body, which is a kind of sacrifice and an example of friendship. ‎ ‎Studio Mir's animation style is modern, flowing, and the use of colors in the scenes is effective. Although the use of CG in some scenes was felt by some viewers as a bit unnatural or jarring. However, according to some experience, the character design has really made a believable and beautiful transition to webtoons.

‎The Lookism anime series has made me think in many ways. It's not just about looks or external beauty, but how brave, compassionate and truthful a person is inside that matters most. While watching this anime, I kept thinking, have I ever judged someone based on their appearance? Have I ever hurt someone's self-esteem, knowingly or unknowingly? ‎ ‎The music of this anime goes along with the emotions of the story remarkably well. The rap songs and Basco's powerful music sequences are especially great. The song Like That by the band Ateez is quite suitable as the opening theme. Studio Mir's animation style is very clean, the movements are natural, the use of colors is appropriate, which has taken Korean animation to a new height. ‎I wanted the festival song performance, Basco and Deok-hwa's participation and the development of their relationship to be more elaborate. These moments are actually full of human bonds. ‎

‎Lookism vividly highlights issues such as appearance-based discrimination, bullying, self-esteem and mental weakness in society through the story. Hyung-suk’s attempt to understand the meaning of his changing life, the similarities and contrasts between his two bodies, convey a social message that is anti-delusional. “Lookism” is not just a story about a boy, it is a mirror that highlights the hypocrisy and appearance-centricity within our society. People with good looks get advantages, while ordinary or fat people are subjected to contempt, neglect and even torture.

‎Lookism is not just an entertaining series, it is a social message, a protest and the beginning of a new way of thinking. A series like this has made us think about a lot.
