Hyottoko

Hyottoko (火男) is a legendary figure, and today a type of mask represents him. They sometimes differ in the size of the left and right eyes, and are usually accompanied by a scarf around the head (usually white with blue dots). The name comes from Hi (fire) and Otoko (man), because the figure breathes fire through a bamboo tube, and through local dialects it evolved into Hyottoko (ひょっとこ). In Iwate Prefecture, there is a legend about the origin of Hyottoko. It tells of a boy with a strange face who could produce gold from his navel. When someone died in a house, the mask of this boy was placed on the hearth to attract good fortune. The boy's name was Hyoutokusu (ヒョウトクス). This is considered one of the possible names that gave rise to Hyottoko. There are similar stories about the origin of the name, but in northeastern Japan, he is considered the god of fire. Hyottoko appears in the traditional Dengaku dance (田楽), playing a comic role. Dancers wearing hyottoko masks also participate in various local Japanese festivals, including the one held in Miyazaki Prefecture: Hyuga hyottoko natsumaturi (日向ひょっとこ夏祭り). The Hyottoko dance is believed to have originated in the Edo Period.

Hyottoko (火男) es un personaje legendario, y hoy es un tipo de máscara que lo representa. En ocasiones difieren en el tamaño de los ojos izquierdo y derecho, habitualmente se acompaña de un pañuelo alrededor de la cabeza (usualmente blanco con puntos azules). El nombre proviene de Hi (fuego) y Otoko (hombre), porque el personaje arroja fuego a través de un tubo de bambú, y a través de los dialectos locales derivó en Hyottoko (ひょっとこ). En la prefectura de Iwate existe una leyenda sobre el origen de Hyottoko. En ella se relata como era un niño con una cara extraña que podía producir oro con su ombligo. Cuando alguien moría en una casa, había que poner la máscara de este niño sobre el hogar para atraer la buena fortuna. El nombre del niño era Hyoutokusu (ヒョウトクス). Este es considerado uno de los nombres posibles que dieron lugar a Hyottoko. Existen historias similares sobre el origen del nombre, pero en el noreste de Japón es tenido por dios del fuego. Hyottoko aparece en el baile tradicional Dengaku (田楽), representando un papel cómico. Asimismo, danzantes con máscaras hyottoko participan en varios festivales locales japoneses, entre los cuales está el que se celebra en la prefectura de Miyazaki Miyazaki: Hyuga hyottoko natsumaturi (日向ひょっとこ夏祭り). Se cree que la danza de Hyottoko tiene su origen en el Periodo Edo.

All images used are my own. I didn't use AI or reference materials to create them. Everything was drawn using my Wacom Intuos S CTL-4100 tablet using Clip Studio Paint Ex drawing software. Only the Hyottoko image from Wikipedia was taken from the aforementioned encyclopedia.

Todas las imágenes utilizadas son de mi autoría, para hacerlas no he utilizado ia ni material de referencia, todo ha sido dibujado a haciendo uso de mi tablet wacom intuos s ctl-4100 en el software de dibujo Clip Studio Paint Ex. Solo la imagen de Hyottoko de Wikipedia ha sido tomada de la enciclopedia anteriormente mencionada.

This is the second post in a series of illustrations. Finally, I'll leave the entire collection in PNG format in case you're interested in using them as stickers on other social media.
