Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a chronic medical condition characterized by persistently elevated blood pressure. It is called the "silent killer" because it often has no noticeable symptoms in the early stages, yet, it significantly increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney damage, and other serious health issues if left unchecked. A normal blood pressure reading is generally considered to be between 90–129 mmHg systolic (upper number) and 64–84 mmHg diastolic (lower number) and values consistently at or above 130/80 mmHg may indicate hypertension. **To monitor your blood pressure accurately:** * Sit calmly for at least 5 minutes before taking a reading. * Use a well-calibrated digital monitor or visit a healthcare facility. * If you get an abnormal result, rest and repeat the measurement after a few minutes. * Consistently high readings over several days should prompt a visit to your doctor. * Regular checks can save lives—hypertension is manageable when detected early.
