Continuing with the numbered sketchbook, today we reach day 50, and although I have skipped a lot of practice days, I can assure you that on those days when I didn’t draw in the sketchbook, I did draw elsewhere. I even cut out and pasted into the sketchbook some drawings that I really liked. But today it was time, as was once my habit, to do a structured practice. I will be trying to cover warm-up exercises, textures and lines, hatching, drawing, and anatomy. The idea for today’s practice is quite ambitious, but I have more time than on other occasions.
Continuando con el sketchbook numerado, hoy nos toca el día 50, y aunque me he saltado un montón de días de prácticas, puedo asegurar que en esos días que no he dibujado en el sketchbook sí he dibujado en otros lugares. Incluso he recortado y pegado al sketchbook algunos dibujos que de verdad me gustaron mucho. Pero ya hoy tocaba, como antes era costumbre, una práctica estructurada. Estaré tratando de abarcar ejercicios de calentamiento, de texturas y líneas, hatching, dibujo y anatomía. La idea de la práctica de hoy es bien ambiciosa, pero tengo más tiempo que en otras ocasiones.
I will start with graphite, using a simple HB school pencil, and I will be doing the classic warm-up exercises but without dedicating too much time to them: straight lines, concentric circles, spirals, and some gradients without blending. I will also do a bit of hatching to obtain different tonal values. Using both completed scales, I will try to shade some spheres with left-side lighting. A classic warm-up page.
Comenzaré con grafito, un simple lápiz HB escolar, y estaré haciendo los clásicos ejercicios de calentamiento pero sin dedicarles mucho tiempo: líneas rectas, círculos concéntricos, espirales y algunos degradados sin difuminar. También un poco de hatching para obtener distintas tonalidades. Utilizando ambas escalas hechas, trataré de sombrear algunas esferas con luz lateral izquierda. Una clásica página para calentar.
For the next page of my sketchbook, I did exactly the same, but instead of using an HB pencil, I used a 0.5 black ink pen: a tonal scale with hatching, some lines in different directions, and shading of spheres.
Para la siguiente hoja de mi sketchbook hice exactamente lo mismo, pero en lugar de usar un lápiz HB utilicé un bolígrafo de tinta negra 0.5: una escala de tonalidades con hatching, algunas líneas en distintas direcciones y sombreado de esferas.
For the third page, I divided it into six sections to create six different texture patterns. The first one I made by increasing the thickness of the nodes in a freehand grid drawn with straight lines. The second, which resembles fish scales, was my least favorite of the six. The third consisted of straight lines in different directions, reminding me of a wicker texture or a weave of natural fibers. The fourth was reptile scales, very small and connected to each other. The fifth reminds me of the ocean surface near the shore, where the waves break into sea foam; I made it following the procedure of the first section but instead of straight lines, I used curved lines — it was my favorite of the six. And finally, the sixth and last was small concentric straight lines, perhaps resembling a kind of fur.
Para la tercera hoja la dividí en seis secciones para crear seis patrones de texturas distintos. El primero lo hice aumentando el grosor de los nodos de una cuadrícula hecha a mano alzada con líneas rectas. El segundo, uno que recuerda escamas de un pez, fue mi menos favorito de los seis. El tercero, líneas rectas en distintas direcciones, me recuerda una textura de mimbre o un tejido de fibras naturales. El cuarto, escamas de reptil, muy pequeñas y unidas entre sí. El quinto me recuerda la superficie del océano cerca de la costa, donde las olas rompen en espuma de mar; lo hice siguiendo el procedimiento del primer sector pero, en lugar de líneas rectas, líneas curvas. Fue mi favorito de los seis. Y por último, el sexto y final fueron líneas rectas pequeñas concéntricas, quizás como una especie de pelaje.
Next, I did a study of different types of lines, with various thicknesses, and also how to do hatching with each of them. My favorites are straight lines and crosshatching. Pointillism is a bit challenging for me, and I think it’s a matter of having quite a lot of patience. I have never used scribbling to fill in, but perhaps I will do it someday or in some practice. I have seen many portraits made with this type of line, and I love the result—only I don’t yet have the confidence to try it.
Seguido hice un estudio de distintos tipos de líneas, con distintos grosores, y también cómo hacer hatching con cada una de ellas. Mis favoritas son las líneas rectas y las líneas cruzadas. El puntillismo se me complica un poco y creo que es cuestión de bastante paciencia. Nunca he utilizado scribbling para rellenar, quizás lo haga algún día o en alguna práctica. He visto muchos retratos con este tipo de líneas y me encanta el resultado, solo que no tengo la confianza para hacerlo.
Time to put what I’ve practiced into a real drawing, and I found this beautiful bird illustration on Pinterest that I wanted to recreate—especially because I love the shape of its beak and its plumage. Bringing that into my sketchbook was extremely satisfying, and honestly, I really liked the result. It’s one of my favorites in this sketchbook, so much so that it’s featured in the day’s presentation banner.
Hora de poner lo practicado en un dibujo real, y encontré este bello dibujo de un ave en Pinterest y quise hacerlo igual, sobre todo porque me encanta la figura del pico y el plumaje. Llevar eso a mi libreta fue extremadamente satisfactorio y, la verdad, me gustó mucho el resultado, uno de mis favoritos de este sketchbook, tanto que está en el banner de presentación del día.
The next page will be a change of paradigms compared to what we have been seeing so far today, as I will return to the faces from Andrew Loomis’ book Fun With A Pencil. I will be doing six new expressions: horror, disdain, remorse, anticipation, elation, and enjoyment. My favorite was horror. I have only a few expressions left to complete from this Loomis page—perhaps on day 51 I will finish them all.
La siguiente hoja será un cambio de paradigmas en lo que estamos viendo hasta ahora en el día, y es que retomaré los rostros del libro Fun With A Pencil de Andrew Loomis. Estaré haciendo seis expresiones nuevas: horror, disdain, remorse, anticipation, elation y enjoyment. Mi favorita fue horror. Me faltan pocas expresiones por hacer de esta página de Loomis; quizás en el día 51 las termine todas.
And for the last day, I will return to the training I created myself, and I now have in my hands one of those Japanese books called TRONCO—I think that’s what they’re called—to practice where I had been stuck: the human figure, bodies with bones and muscles. So I made a double page focused on studying the connection between the head and the torso, highlighting the joints in yellow as indicated in the book.
And so my practice for today comes to an end—without a doubt, a very, very productive day. Thank you for joining me for another day of drawing.
Y para el último día retomaré la formación que yo mismo creé, y ya tengo en mis manos uno de esos libros japoneses llamados TRONCO, creo que le dicen así, para practicar donde estaba estancado: figura humana, cuerpos con huesos y músculos. Así que hice una página doble centrada en el estudio de la unión cabeza y tronco, las uniones las resalté, como indica el libro, con color amarillo.
Y así terminan mis prácticas de hoy, sin dudas un día muy, muy productivo. Gracias por acompañarme un día más dibujando.
