New day of practice for my digital sketchbook. Today I'll be trying to draw a portrait of a girl. For that, I'll use some poses from Pinterest as reference. I especially like the photos where girls hold flowers in front of their faces. One of my illustration inspirations, Yoshitaka Amano, often features the theme of girls and flowers—maybe that's why I enjoy drawing it so much too.
Nuevo día de práctica para el sketchbook digital. Hoy estaré tratando de dibujar un retrato de una chica. Para eso tomaré como referencia algunas poses de Pinterest. Sobre todo, me gustan esas fotos donde las chicas sostienen flores frente a su rostro. Además, uno de mis referentes en cuanto a ilustración (Yoshitaka Amano) tiene ese tópico de chicas y flores muy presente, quizás por eso me guste tanto dibujar eso también.
I'm a complete beginner, and I know this will be a big challenge—especially because I have no idea how to construct a face. I'm heading into the Loomis method soon. But I do have a basic understanding and, above all, a strong desire to draw. So there's no time to waste: here is my first sketch. I already know I struggle with many aspects of the face, like the placement of the eyes and—most of all—the nose.
Soy muy, muy principiante y de antemano sé que esto será un gran reto, sobre todo porque no tengo la menor idea de construcción de rostros. Dentro de poco estudiaré el método Loomis. Pero sí tengo una noción básica y, sobre todo, muchos deseos de dibujar. Así que para luego es tarde: aquí está mi primer boceto. Sé que del rostro se me dificultan muchas cosas, como la posición de los ojos y, sobre todo, lo que más, la nariz.
My second sketch really pleased me. I think I managed to solve a good part of the anatomy without formal knowledge, and it motivates me to keep drawing. I liked it so much that I was afraid to color it, because I know coloring a drawing can sometimes ruin it. But nothing has ever been written about cowards—we must learn by trying, one day at a time.
Mi segundo sketch me gustó mucho. Creo que resolví buena parte de la anatomía sin conocimientos, y eso me anima a seguir dibujando. Me gustó tanto que me dio miedo colorearlo, porque sé que colorear un dibujo puede dejarlo mucho peor. Pero de los cobardes nada se ha escrito, y hay que aprender intentándolo, un día a la vez.

Well, as promised, I gave it a try—though without a doubt, the coloring didn’t go as well as the sketchbook drawing. Still, I gave it a shot, and it could always have turned out worse. I tried to render it a little to see if it improved, but in the end, I decided to stop.
Bueno, y como lo prometido es deuda, sin dudas el coloreado no me fue tan bien como con el sketchbook. Pero bueno, al menos lo intenté un poco, y siempre podría haber sido peor. Traté de renderizarlo un poco para ver si mejoraba, pero al final decidí parar.
What did I learn from today’s practice? Drawing faces is difficult, and although it may seem like you can do it just by following references, it actually requires a deep understanding of both anatomical and structural aspects, as well as the management of light and shadow. My knowledge is still in its early stages when it comes to tackling complex faces, but that shouldn’t discourage me—on the contrary, I should take it as a starting point to push myself harder and structure my studies more effectively. Learning to draw in a self-taught way is a challenge, and it may look different for everyone, so let’s lift our spirits and keep drawing. Thank you for being with me one more day!
¿Qué aprendí de la práctica de hoy? Dibujar rostros es difícil, y aunque creas que puedes hacerlo solo guiándote por referencias, se necesita mucho conocimiento tanto anatómico y estructural como en el manejo de luces y sombras. Mis conocimientos son aún incipientes para abordar rostros complejos, pero eso no puede desanimarme. Al contrario, debo tomarlo como un punto de partida para esforzarme más y estructurar mejor mis estudios. Aprender a dibujar de forma autodidacta es un reto, y puede presentarse de forma distinta para todos, así que ¡a subir los ánimos y seguir dibujando! Gracias por acompañarme un día más.
