Since I started drawing and seriously documenting the entire learning process—every success and setback—on this blog, my sketchbook has been by my side. It’s not the best one out there, and the quality is terrible; the pages aren’t even white, since they’re recycled school notebooks. But without a doubt, it has still been a true joy to have a physical space where I can capture my ideas.
Desde que comencé a dibujar y a tomarme en serio documentar todo el proceso de aprendizaje—todos los aciertos y derrotas—en este blog, mi sketchbook me ha acompañado. No es el mejor de todos y la calidad es horrible; ni siquiera son hojas blancas, ya que son libretas escolares de papel reciclado. Pero sin dudas, aun así ha sido una verdadera dicha contar con un material físico donde plasmar mis ideas.
A few days ago, while doing a pose study, I wanted to draw a character inspired by the work of my great reference Amano and his pieces for the Final Fantasy series. That’s how this armored warrior with a sword came to be. If I had to assign her a job, she could easily be a paladin or a dragoon knight. Honestly, I really liked the design—it’s one of the first OCs I’ve drawn in full body and dynamic pose. It’s not a perfect drawing, but it came entirely from my imagination, and to me, that’s more than enough.
Unos días atrás, mientras hacía un estudio sobre poses, quise dibujar un personaje inspirado en la obra de mi gran referente Amano y sus trabajos para la serie Final Fantasy. Así surgió esta guerrera de armadura y espada. Si tuviera que asignarle un job, podría ser fácilmente un paladín o un caballero dragoniano. La verdad, el diseño me gustó mucho y es de los primeros OC que dibujo en cuerpo completo y pose dinámica. No es un dibujo perfecto, pero vino completamente de mi imaginación, y para mí eso es más que suficiente.
So why not take her out of the sketchbook where she was born and bring her into the digital world? I enjoy drawing digitally because I don’t have the limitations in tools that I face in the physical world.
Así que, ¿por qué no sacarla de mi sketchbook donde nació y llevarla al mundo digital? Me gusta dibujar en digital porque no tengo las limitaciones en herramientas que tengo en el mundo físico.
Without thinking too much, I imported my drawing into Photoshop and began sketching over the loose lines from my sketchbook—over the chaotic strokes made with a ballpoint pen. Little by little, the new and beautiful stylized figure of my warrior emerged. I couldn’t resist naming her Silla and imagining all the adventures she must have lived in her short life.
Sin pensarlo mucho, importé mi dibujo a Photoshop y comencé a dibujar sobre las líneas desenfadadas de mi sketchbook, sobre los caóticos trazos realizados con bolígrafo. Poco a poco salió a la luz la nueva y bella figura estilizada de mi guerrera. Se me hizo imposible no bautizarla como Silla e imaginarme todas las aventuras que habrá vivido en su corta edad.
I wanted to finish by adding loose and free colors—stained and expressive—with digital textures and splashes. Without a doubt, I believe this is the drawing that most embodies both the epic stylization of Amano and my own growth as a creator. It’s not a perfect drawing, but I made it using all the knowledge and skills I’ve acquired, and to me, that’s more than enough. Thank you for accompanying me once again in drawing. Bye.
Quise terminar dándole colores sueltos y libres, manchados y desenfadados, con texturas digitales y manchas. Sin dudas, creo que este es el dibujo que más tiene del carácter de la épica y estilización de Amano y, a la vez, de mi propio desarrollo como creador. No es un dibujo perfecto, pero lo hice con todos los conocimientos y habilidades que he adquirido, y para mí es más que suficiente. Gracias por acompañarme dibujando una vez más. Bye.
