Today I come to #hivebookclub more than with a suggestion, but with a plea, as I believe it is essential for everyone who loves books and literature to delve into historical novels. And of course, today I bring you a read that, although not recent, forces me time and again to return to it and recommend it: The Last Legion by Valerio Massimo Manfredi.
Manfredi, being a historian and archaeologist, found in historical novels a way to channel a unique magic, which leads many to call him one of the great contemporary masters. When this novel, which I will share my impressions of today, was published in 2002, there were mixed opinions about its quality. But since I prefer to see the light rather than the shadows, I was deeply moved by this book, which at times makes you feel like you are watching a movie.
The novel begins in a nightmarish setting, depicting the dying Roman Empire, with an emperor who is just a child under the guardianship of a despotic father who is soon murdered by Odoacer, leader of the Heruli. Romulus, the name of the young emperor, is exiled. Everything changes with the arrival of a small, heroic group led by a loyal centurion and a formidable soldier who together undertake a nearly suicidal mission to rescue Romulus and take him far away from the traitors.
Are you still following the story so far?... Well, I continue with the essentials of this incredible adventure, which unfolds as a journey full of skirmishes, chases, betrayals, acts of valor, and then the two main characters: the centurion Aurelius as a hero with an unbreakable sense of duty, and Livia, a soldier who brings a fresh air to the narrative. Their relationship with Romulus, the young emperor, is the emotional core of this story.
Now, what makes this novel special and at times moves it away from a historical novel to place us before an adventure? Manfredi, as a master storyteller, weaves threads that connect this story of the decline and fall of the great Roman Empire with the Arthurian legend. It mentions the sword of Julius Caesar as the sword forged in the air, which is the famous Excalibur. The young Romulus, as the last of the Caesars, is the ancestor of King Arthur, and your tutor and master is clearly the precursor to Merlin.
You surely now understand why this novel manages to enchant any reader, and also at play is the author's sensitivity, who does not use this resource merely for self-praise but instead paints for us the transmutation of a civilization more than its death. Rome does not die; it only transforms, and its legacy of law, order, and civilization does not disappear with the last emperor but is absorbed into the myth of Camelot and the Round Table.
There are many know-it-alls who see dark areas in this novel, and it is accused of having an overly convenient plot; the coincidences that save its protagonists on more than one occasion are sometimes questionable and even seem forced. They also talk about the superficial characterization of the villains, not to mention the accusations of historical licenses.
Nevertheless, I continue to extend my plea for you not to let time pass without reading it, because ultimately it is an enormously entertaining and satisfying novel, a true epic whose value lies in its ability to capture the imagination while we witness the tragedy that was the fall of the Roman Empire as hope is born. When Manfredi connects the end of antiquity with the beginning of British myths, he offers a poetic vision of the continuity of civilization.
All my friends, this is an essential read for lovers of adventure historical novels and for anyone who has ever wondered where history ends and myth begins.

La รบltima legiรณn: donde termina la historia y comienza el mito || Reseรฑa
Hoy llego a #hivebookclub mรกs que con una sugerencia, con una peticiรณn, pues creo imprescindible para todo aquel que ame los libros y la literatura, llegar a las novelas histรณricas. Y claro, justamente hoy les traigo una lectura que, aunque no reciente, me obliga una y otra vez a volver sobre ella y a sugerirla: La รบltima legiรณn, de Valerio Massimo Manfredi.
Manfredi, siendo historiador y arqueรณlogo, encontrรณ en las novelas histรณricas la forma de catalizar una magia รบnica, lo que hace que sea llamado por muchos como uno de los grandes maestros contemporรกneos. Cuando en el 2002 sale a la luz esta novela de la que hoy les dirรฉ mis impresiones, hubo criterios dispares acerca de su factura, pero como yo soy mรกs de ver las luces que las sombras, quedรฉ enternecida con este libro que por momentos te hace parecer que estรกs viendo una pelรญcula.
La novela comienza en un escenario de pesadilla, pues ya se ve a un moribundo imperio romano, con un emperador que es apenas un niรฑo bajo la tutela de un dรฉspota padre que no tarda en ser asesinado por Odoacro, lรญder de los hรฉrulos. Rรณmulo, que asรญ se llama el pequeรฑo emperador, es desterrado. Todo da un giro con la llegada de un reducido y heroico grupo liderado por un centuriรณn fiel y una formidable soldado que juntos llevarรกn una misiรณn casi suicida que es la de rescatar a Rรณmulo y llevarlo muy lejos de los traidores.
ยฟHasta ahora me siguen con la historia?... Pues continรบo con lo elemental de esta increรญble aventura que se engarza en una travesรญa repleta de escaramuzas, persecuciones, traiciones, actos de valor y entonces los dos principales personajes: el centuriรณn Aurelio como hรฉroe con un inquebrantable sentido del deber y Livia, una soldado que da un aire fresco a la narraciรณn. La relaciรณn de ellos dos con Rรณmulo, el pequeรฑo emperador, es el nรบcleo emocional de esta historia.
Ahora bien, ยฟquรฉ es lo que hace especial esta novela y que por momentos la aleja de la novela histรณrica para ponernos delante una aventura? Manfredi, como un maestro de la narrativa, teje hilos que conectan esta historia de la decadencia y fin del gran imperio romano con la leyenda artรบrica. Se hace menciรณn a la espada de Julio Cรฉsar como la espada que se forja en el aire, que es la famosa Excalibur. El joven Rรณmulo, como รบltimo de los cรฉsares, es el ancestro del Rey Arturo y su tutor y maestro es claramente el precursor de Merlรญn.
Seguro ya entienden por quรฉ esta novela logra enamorar a cualquier lector, y que ademรกs estรก en juego la sensibilidad del autor, que no usa solo este recurso para vanagloriarse, sino que nos dibuja la transmutaciรณn de una civilizaciรณn mรกs que su muerte. Roma no muere, solo se transforma y su legado de ley, orden y civilizaciรณn no desaparece con el รบltimo emperador, sino que es absorbido en el mito de Camelot y la Mesa Redonda.
Hay muchos sabiondos que ven zonas oscuras en esta novela y es acusada de un exceso de conveniencia en su trama, y son a veces cuestionables las coincidencias que salvan a sus protagonistas en mรกs de una ocasiรณn, que incluso parecen forzadas. Tambiรฉn hablan de la superficial caracterizaciรณn de los villanos, y ni hablar de las acusaciones por licencias histรณricas.
No obstante, sigo extendiendo mi peticiรณn de que no dejen pasar el tiempo sin leerla, porque en definitiva es una novela enormemente entretenida y satisfactoria, toda una epopeya cuyo valor reside en su capacidad de capturar la imaginaciรณn mientras somos testigos de la tragedia que fue la caรญda del imperio romano mientras nace la esperanza. Cuando Manfredi conecta el fin de la antigรผedad con el inicio de los mitos britรกnicos, ofrece la visiรณn poรฉtica de la continuidad de la civilizaciรณn.
Amigos todos, esta es una lectura imprescindible para los amantes de la novela histรณrica de aventuras y para cualquiera que alguna vez se haya preguntado dรณnde termina la historia y comienza el mito.
